founder’s note

I sometimes wonder what the Greek philosophers would think about us today. I imagine Plato or Socrates observing young couples conduct entire conversations through WhatsApp on their phones while sat across from each other at dinner and I can already imagine them slapping themselves in the forehead. And, yes, I am aware there is an emoji for this gesture. No, I do not imagine Plato messaging this to Socrates on his iPhone. I am quizzical as to what they would say about people meeting their potential spouses through an application that allows them to form a one-second impression of an image projected on the screen of their mobile phones before they swipe left or right, before they’ve ever spoken a word to one another. And, most of all, I wonder…

editor’s note

They say that when it rains, it pours. Never was that truer for us this last quarter, when a slew of different things all took place simultaneously, both internally and externally, all of which added up to massive transformations in the Revolution team and company on-and-off-line, et cetera. Suffice it to say, we’ve got plenty of changes that you’ll soon see in the company, some due to sheer dumb luck, others because we made an active attempt to change things in the company, and because we’ve had the strong support of an entire industry that’s really cheering us on as we try to re-define what it means to be Revolution as we’re about to turn 15. That’s right, we’re about to hit our adolescence proper, and like any hormonal teenager striding…

jake gyllenhaal returns as face of santos de cartier

After a successful run with the maison last year, Jake Gyllenhaal has once again been named as the face of Santos de Cartier for 2019. Embodying core Cartier values of dedication, curiosity and fearless pioneering spirit, the American actor-director-producer is the classic Santos de Cartier man, evident in his diverse film career including Brokeback Mountain (2005), Nocturnal Animals (2016), and more recently Spiderman: Far From Home. Inspired by the legacy of aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, Cartier has expanded the collection to include the newly launched Santos-Dumont, the Santos de Cartier Chronograph and the Santos de Cartier Skeleton Noctambule.…

iron man’s favoured wrist gear: urwerk

Part of the journey is the end. And Robert Downey Jr ends his decade long career as one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes with not one, but two URWERKs. We first notice the iconic UR 105-CT Streamliner on Tony Stark’s wrist when the Avengers old and new come together to plan a very Back To The Future-esque Time Heist to retrieve the Infinity Stones in the second act. The Streamliner’s case protects an openwork carousel carrying four satellites, each bearing three numerals for the hours. When closed, the dial features analogue and digital display of time, along with the power reserve indicator and digital seconds, which was made using a photolithographic process, thus weighing less than a tenth of a gram. Pretty handy when you’re planning on being at the wrong place,…

hobbes and shaw’s wrist picks: rolex 5513

The Transporter anti-hero was spotted with his Rolex Submariner 5513 during a press junket for the Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbes and Shaw starring himself and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Known among watch enthusiasts as the watch to own, the Rolex Submariner 5513 is the longest continually produced series in Rolex’s history, running from 1962 until 1989. Although it is unknown which year Statham’s watch was produced, the shiny wrist candy is clearly a favourite of his collection, appearing in his films Killer Elite (2011) Parker (2013) and of course the latest installments of the Fast and Furious franchise.…

2019 rolex laureates announced

Five Rolex Laureates for 2019 were announced at the Rolex Awards Ceremony, which was held in June at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C. The awards recognise exceptional visionaries who are significantly improving the world around them. The Rolex Awards for Enterprise supports their causes with funding, access to the collective expertise of previous Rolex Laureates and a Rolex chronometer. To enhance the selection process, public opinion was included for the first time as one of the criteria used to select the Laureates. The five winning Rolex Laureates this year champion a range of projects that benefit the public good and the environment. Molecular biologist Miranda Wang from Canada devises new ways to utilise the chemicals from unrecyclable plastic waste in industrial and consumer products; Brazilian ecologist João Campos-Silva works…
