all change for bamford

Having established his eponymous brand as the go-to source for customized Rolexes, George Bamford has become the official supplier for personalized models from TAG Heuer. With the blessing of Jean-Claude Biver, head honcho for LVMH Watches, Bamford Watch Department (BWD) is now the first and only official customizer for any Swiss luxury watch brand. As with the earlier official Zenith project, BWD will source all watches, components and other supplies directly from the TAG Heuer manufacture. Customers are given the opportunity to personalize a TAG Heuer watch directly from the company’s website, bamfordwatchdepartment.com, using a dedicated new online customizer with myriad options. Working with Monacos, Autavias and Carreras as their base models, clients can personalize their watches with case coatings, dial colors, indexes, date backgrounds, hands and other details. couture time

When Dolce & Gabbana opened their Gwenael Nicolas-designed store at 6/8 Bond Street, London in November, it was with great fanfare that included a version of the design duo’s super high-end Alte Artigianalità couture runway show incorporating Alta Moda (for women), Alta Sartoria (for men) and Alta Gioielleria (high jewelry). Always original and themed around its host city, Alte Artigianalità is shown twice a year in Italy with spin-off shows around the world — this latest one representing the first time it has been held in London. The store — Dolce & Gabbana’s first with designated floors for the couture lines — has an area dedicated to the Alta Orologeria collection, which features unique watches handmade in Milan. The initial range, introduced earlier this year, consisted of four men’s timepieces in…

thirty years of style

When a brand possesses a design language that elicits instant recognition, it makes sense to use the motifs on any objects that they might suit. Chanel, known for so many monumental creations, including the Little Black Dress and No. 5 perfume, also has a design classic in its No. 2.55 bag, a must-own accessory created by Mademoiselle Chanel in February 1955. For those who love that clutch, the company has applied its signature details to a new, celebratory line of wristwatches. Quilting — for that is the decoration of note here — hardly seems a likely carry-over from bag to watch, but the new stainless-steel Code Coco, marking three decades of Chanel watchmaking, utilizes the pattern on the bracelets that enable the timepieces to recall the much-coveted purse. The geometric array…

the time keepers: piaget and warhol

As relevant as ever — he recently featured as a character in the latest series of the hit TV series American Horror Story: Cult — Andy Warhol remains a byword for style and vision three decades after his death. As Warhol was well-known as a watch enthusiast and protégé of Yves Piaget, it is especially fitting that the Swiss watch maison has elected to play a major role in preserving Warhol’s unique artistic legacy for future generations. Opened in October for one night only was the Time Keepers exhibition. It featured never-before-displayed Piaget-themed treasures from Warhol’s Time Capsules including Piaget watches collected by the artist. The timepieces were flown in from Geneva and the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and reunited solely for that single evening at Annabel’s in London. Augmenting the…

omega’s new home

Omega’s continued run of notable achievements in the 21st century embraces the birth of the co-axial escapement, the increased popularity of its vintage models — especially the Speedmaster — and the success of the James Bond franchise. Beginning the next chapter in its saga, the company has opened its newest production facility at the brand’s HQ site in Bienne, Switzerland. For the new building, Omega turned to the award-winning Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. Noted for his innovative approaches, Ban was named the 37 recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the most prestigious award in modern architecture. His design for Omega represents “the industry’s most cutting-edge facility for watch assembly, training and quality control”. Conceived to be eco-friendly, it was built with sustainable Swiss spruce and an ingenious indoor climate and energy concept.…

Special guest Larry Holmes, sparring partner and friend of Ali, and one of only five fighters to defeat him, shared stories with the guests. His personal recollections amplified the legend of the boxer who was named Sports Illustrated’s “Sportsman of the Century” and GQ’s “Athlete of the Century”, who served as a United Nations Messenger of Peace and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Amnesty International Lifetime Achievement Award.
