founder's note

ALRIGHT, BEFORE I GET TO THE WATCHES and the overall mood of the 2018 Geneva Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), I need to get something off my chest. Baselworld – the temporary second home of those plying our trade in that glorious merger of science and magic, craft and art known as haute horlogerie – you need to pull your head out of your ass. Because, like a multitude of others, I have been shamelessly bamboozled, swindled, and financially gutted by you, as you laughed condescendingly like Zeus, haughtily ensconced on his Olympian throne, because you felt that I, like all my ilk, had to prostrate tremulously before your might. But I’ve got news for you. Like Bob Dylan says, “the times they are a-changing,” and with the flight…

past times: princess margaret

Royalty is, or once was, the height of privilege. Money helps, but it’s no substitute for blue blood. With privilege comes an attitude of what the Italians call menefreghismo: the act of simply not giving a damn. When, as with HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, one also believes one’s self to be superior by dint of title, such behaviour is easy to adopt, even if it is not encouraged. Unlike her sister Queen Elizabeth II, who is a paradigm of propriety, Margaret – knowing she was unlikely to sit on the throne – chose from an early age to enjoy herself at all costs. Wild, roguish, loose, or even brutal behaviour was easy to hide before the late-20th century gave us uncensored gossip, phone tapping, fast news, paparazzi and…

cool as a cumberbatch

Just in time for SIHH, Jaeger-LeCoultre announced Benedict Cumberbatch as its latest brand ambassador. A perfect partner for JLC, Cumberbatch has been described by the brand as one who, “embodies the elegant and active man of today with his integrity as an actor, a family man and someone who dedicates himself with energy to charitable endeavours.” Cumberbatch’s first formal engagement with Jaeger-LeCoultre saw him attend the launch of the new Polaris collection in Geneva. The event was also attended by a host of fellow ambassadors and “friends of the brand”. Pictured right are Diego Luna, Cumberbatch, Jaeger-LeCoultre Deputy CEO Geoffroy Lefebvre and Boran Jing. Guests enjoyed cocktails by Colin Peter Field, Head Bartender of the Hotel Ritz Paris, dishes by three Michelin-starred chef Mathieu Pacaud and a performance by French DJ…

bvlgari’s new curiosity shop

According to Bvlgari, the New Curiosity Shop on Rome’s Via Condotti expresses “the utmost creativity of the brand. It is the place in Rome to discover Bvlgari’s wonders along with magnificent, unusual, enchanting and eclectic collections.” Updating Sotirio Bvlgari’s original Old Curiosity Shop, which opened in 1905, and located next to the original site, the New Curiosity Shop is aimed at the market for contemporary luxury, with emphasis on a younger generation. It is, in effect, an expression of modern multimedia techniques, applied to the calibre of retailing that would have been the norm for the beau monde a century ago. Intriguingly, the shop itself will prove to be a destination venue as much for its interiors as for the objets on sale. Bvlgari marked the opening on 2 February with an…

gp and lp

This year’s SIHH provided Girard-Perregaux with the perfect opportunity to introduce American singer-songwriter Laura Pergolizzi – better known by her stage name LP – as the newest member of its “Talents Team”. In Girard-Perregaux’s words, “a true friendship developed” between the musician and the manufacture after LP chose to wear a stainless-steel Laureato in the music video for her 2016 track Tightrope. Formally welcomed by CEO Antonio Calce at a press conference in the brand’s SIHH booth, LP treated attendees to an off-the-cuff performance with just her and a ukulele. Calce told the gathered crowd: “This is much more than ‘product placement’. We are looking forward to cultivating this authentic relationship with LP.” LP has so far released four albums and has written songs for the likes of Rihanna, Cher, Backstreet Boys, Christina…

rolex mentors announced for 2018-19

Never a brand to shout about its philanthropic work, we at Revolution believe that Rolex deserves to be applauded for its ongoing work in the arts, environment and science. Sir David has chosen to work with Mariam Kamara, 38 from Niger; Hussain with Marcus Gilmore, 31 from the United States; Pite with Khoudia Touré, 31 from Senegal; and…
