Champagne in hand, we toasted our success, our incredibly passionate team and, of course, our readers and clients, who support us and give such great feedback on our publications. I take this opportunity to introduce you to our newly appointed assistant editor, Amelia Hungerford. Amelia joined us as an intern six years ago and has worked diligently to attain this title and become a much admired and integral part of our team. It is a blessing to work with her. “IT’S BETTER TO SEE SOMETHING ONCE THAN TO HEAR ABOUT IT A THOUSAND TIMES.”Anonymous In our first…

Art de vivre on Darling Harbour Sydney’s first new-build international five-star hotel of the 21st-century towers over the buzz of Darling Harbour. The views take in the tourist hive below, as well as stretching to the skyscrapers of the CBD, the flourishing precinct of Barangaroo and beyond to where ferries ply the harbour waters. The 500-million-dollar Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour opened with much fanfare in October. The location could not be more central, whether you’re a leisure traveller soaking up the Sydney sights or a business traveller attending a conference next door at the International Convention Centre. The 590-room hotel is imbued with Sofitel’s signature French art de vivre, from the welcoming ‘Bonjour’ to the well-stocked Champagne Bar. Le Rivage Pool Bar, beside the fourth-floor infinity pool and SoFit fitness centre, brings…

the rise of the gin bar

THE DISTILLERY, LONDON Home to two bars – The Restroom and Gintonica – this building is a four-floor mecca dedicated to gin on Portobello Road, offering guest rooms and a topf-loor dining room. However, the bar is most proud of its blending experience, the ‘Ginstitute’, a museum dedicated to the rich history of the spirit. Its menu is designed by master distiller Jake Burger, the man behind Portobello Road Gin. the-distillery.london DRY MARTINI, BARCELONA This Spanish speakeasy is host to an array of gin cocktails but, as the name suggests, pays special homage to the classic martini. Knowledgeable staff in crisp tuxedos serve cocktails in a setting of leather, wood and brass reminiscent of classic British cocktail bars, while decor pays a stunning tribute to the spirit, with every surface showcasing antique gin…

the arts trail

UPRISINGS Museo Universitario Arte de Contemporáneo, Mexico City. Until 29 July 2018. The University Museum of Contemporary Art’s exhibition examining political struggle is disarmingly relevant. Covering grand movements and small, Sublevaciones (Uprisings) represents social unrest in 250 manuscripts, documents, paintings, drawings, photographs and films. It features work by Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp and Michel Foucault, alongside Emiliano Zapata (his Manifestos in Nahuatl) and Francisco Toledo (kites of the 43 disappeared Ayotzinapa students), tying this international project into the Mexican experience. Curator Georges Didi-Huberman, a philosopher and art historian, organised the exhibition with Paris’ Jeu de Paume. Rather than choosing a chronological path, Uprisings takes visitors through five areas: Elements, Gestures, Words, Conflicts and Desires. muac.unam.mx THE LADY & THE UNICORN Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney.
