james calvin wilsey

James Calvin Wilsey, former guitarist for Chris Isaak and solo artist, passed away in December. He was 61. Born in Logansport, Indiana, Wilsey moved to San Francisco and first came to prominence playing bass in short-lived punk group the Avengers, which he joined in 1977. In 1981, Wilsey’s future collaborator Chris Isaak put together a rockabilly combo called Silvertone. The band regularly played San Francisco punk club Mabuhay Gardens, where the soundman would show Isaak guitar licks. As Rollling Stone put it: “Finally, Isaak decided it made more sense for the soundman to play the licks himself, and thus Jimmy Wilsey, one of the most gifted rock ’n’ roll guitarists to come along since Robbie Robertson, joined Silvertone.” Wilsey’s last album with Isaak was 1993’s San Francisco Days, but he’ll be best remembered…
