This issue is bursting with new season stitching treats for you to enjoy. Whatever the style you prefer, whatever the size and complexity of the project you have time for, we’ve got the project for you. See in the New Year in style with our versatile set of glitzy designs from Emma Congdon (p56) – make bunting, invitations and photo booth props! And after the festivities, don’t forget to thank family and friends with our adorable woodland critters thank you cards (p74). My favourite time period is the 1920s so I can’t wait to stitch Jenny Van De Wiele’s Art Deco sampler on page 68. And I’m excited to learn some new stitches with Faby Reilly’s set of pretty biscornu pincushions (p38). They use a range of techniques including satin stitch, spider…

meet our guests

Paula Priest is an architectural assistant from Folkestone, UK Fave ever stitching project? A project I designed myself – a poem for my mum for Mother’s Day. I decorated it with flowers and an intricate vine as a border. Worst stitching disaster? Trying to blend Kreinik thread! I didn’t read up on how to use it and it kept splitting and getting in a knot. It was for a wizard project I was doing and it was very frustrating. I put it back in my bag for an “I’ll do it later” project! Fave WOXS design? I love most of the designs, but ‘Henry VIII’ in issue 285 (October 2019) is definitely on my to-stitch list. What do you love the most about cross stitching? The time it gives me to relax but also produce beautiful images that…

up on the farm

Michael Powell’s intricate designs have long been a favourite with stitchers, and it’s no surprise why – he captures amazing colour and detail in his watercolour paintings that then translate beautifully into cross stitch. This evocative scene of a snowy farm has been designed specially just for The World of Cross Stitching, and is an ideal challenge to start off 2020. Michael has a distinctive, ‘crooked’ style of painting, and Hill Top Farm is instantly recognisable as one of his creations. He’s captured the farm at the loveliest point of sunset, when the sky is ablaze with shades of red, yellow, blue and purple. You’ll relish the detail used in the design, where the foreground is brought into sharp relief with backstitch outlines against the half cross stitch of the sky. While…

SHOW YOU CARE Across the UK there are thousands of young people acting as a carer for family and friends – it’s estimated it may be as many as one in five secondary-age children. Caring for someone can have a huge mental and physical strain on a young person, which is why on 30 January the Carers Trust is holding its annual Young Carers Awareness Day. This is to highlight the challenges faced by young carers and to campaign for more support from both the government and the public. You’ll find lots of amazing resources on the Carers Trust website about ways you can get involved and join in. Start by logging onto social media and using the hashtag #youngcarersawarenessday.
