welcome!

Last night as I watched TV, an ad came on in which a bunch of funky, well-dressed women spoke openly about wetting themselves – not completely, but just ‘little leaks’. They spoke about it as if it was completely natural and normal. How times have changed! For years, women have suffered with this issue but it’s only now, finally, that we re breaking the taboo and talking openly about not only this but all manner of peri- and menopause-related symptoms that in the past would have been hush-hush. Certain celebrities have no doubt helped, speaking out about their symptoms so the conversation becomes more acceptable. Three years ago I asked the Top Santé reader panel whether they wanted more advice on menopause: 80 per cent said a resounding yes! Since…

GET GRUBBY FOR LESS STRESS! Anyone who’s passionately green-fingered can attest to gardening’s mood-boosting qualities, and now scientists have discovered one of the reasons why. A special type of anti-inflammatory fat has been identified in a soil bacterium, which researchers from Colorado have shown reduces stress. And as August 12 marks the start of National Allotments Week, what better excuse to spend some time getting your hands dirty? Turn to p16 to find out more about this new research in our mindful summer feature. SUPERMARKETS REDUCE PACKAGING Morrisons is the first UK supermarket chain to remove packaging from most fruit and vegetables, offering customers the choice of up to 127 varieties of loose produce. The chain has also committed to making all its own-brand plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. In…

reading list

The stress-relieving one Pause: 100 Moments of Calm, by Poppy O’Neil (£6.99, Summersdale) On a stressful day, sometimes it just takes a few seconds to tune out and reset a frazzled mind. This little book is a handy reminder to sit and breathe. The bedside one 222 Ways to Trick Yourself to Sleep, by Kim Jones (£12.99, Little Brown) This pleasingly science-backed book contains quick, clever suggestions for insomniacs. You might think you’ve read everything there is to know on the subject, but this is full of surprises. The everyday one Mindfulness On The Go, by Anna Black (£12.99, Cico Books) It’s all well and good remembering to be mindful on a quiet night at home, but what about when you’re in a traffic jam or at the office? This book has all the answers! The fun one Fizz: 80…

Boots The high street store has relaunched its free Online NHS Repeat Prescription Service to make ordering drugs easier than ever. Currently only nine per cent of us order repeat prescriptions online, but when you consider 86 per cent of us use online banking, it’s surely only a matter of time before the world of medicine goes the same way. It might sound strange to suggest that feeling miserable can sometimes be a funny thing, but The Hilarious World of Depression podcast says otherwise! This laugh-out-loud show features comedians who have experienced mental health struggles, all talking about their experiences in an honest, funny way.…

ditch and switch

SWAP: Centrifugal juicer FOR: Slow-press juicer I used to use a centrifugal juicer – they spin the fruit and veg super fast to extract the juice – but I’ve been converted to the slow-press, masticating models, which grind the ingredients to extract more juice. They take a tiny bit longer to use but are worth it. This Smeg SJF01 Slow Juicer (£499.95, smeguk. com) has got me back into juicing pure celery, which has become something of a health trend worldwide. You do have to cut up the fruit and veg quite small unlike with some larger chutes but it’s easy to use and clean.…
