editor’s letter

There was a time when people tended to assume that chic was a Parisian prerogative, while dowdiness prevailed in England. As Nancy Mitford observed in Don’t Tell Alfred (the third novel in her wondrous trilogy that begins with The Pursuit of Love): ‘An Englishwoman’s one idea is to get into something perfectly shapeless and leave it at that.’ Mitford herself revered French couture, and was always beautifully dressed (though it took the success of The Pursuit of Love to allow her to afford a new wardrobe from Christian Dior). But in an essay entitled ‘What Is Chic?’ that Mitford wrote for our sister magazine Harper’s Bazaar in 1952 – by which time she was living full-time in Paris, yet famed for her joyous evocation of the British upper classes –…

contributors — spring 2017

GEMMA ARTERTON Our cover star got her big break in 2008 as a Bond girl in Quantum of Solace. Since then, the English actress has also conquered the stage as the lead in Saint Joan at the Donmar Warehouse and with an Olivier-nominated performance in the West End musical Made in Dagenham. Her new film, Their Finest, is released this spring. A British Museum treasure you would like to take home ‘The Statue of Tara – the Buddhist representation of mercy, compassion and meditation – is exquisite.’ Tell us a secret ‘I am terrible at keeping secrets. Never tell me one.’ Your favourite garden ‘Great Dixter in Sussex, bursting with spring flowers.’ SASHA SLATER The former deputy editor of Town & Country says that launching this magazine in 2014 is one of the…

what to wear to marry prince harry

If the romantic rumours are true, the prince of the party-goers and former wild child of the Royal Family has finally met his match. Meghan Markle has stolen Harry’s heart, and although we don’t want to tempt the gods, another much-anticipated royal wedding may now be on the cards… The Californian actress and UN advocate is clearly no shrinking violet, but even the bravest woman would feel daunted by the prospect of choosing a dress for the occasion. It’s not merely that the eyes of the world will be upon her; but she has a particularly hard act to follow. With its clean, elegant lines, lace detail and dramatic train, the wedding gown designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen for the Duchess of Cambridge is still influencing bridal fashion six…

the varsity boat race

Bitter rivalry breaks out on the banks of the Thames as the annual battle for supremacy between Oxford and Cambridge gets under way. Demonstrate where your loyalties lie in an iconic boating blazer of light or dark blue, or show your true colours more subtly with an Hermès tie or polka-dot pocket square. A crisp white shirt from Dior or Dubarry and tailored Armani chinos keep things civilised. PHOTOGRAPHS: ROWING BLAZERS BY JACK CARLSON (PUBLISHED BY THAMES AND HUDSON 2014). jeunesse dorée

To visit the weekend home of the designer Cordelia de Castellane is to abandon humdrum reality for a fairy tale. The noise and traffic of Paris gradually give way to silent roads lined with plane-trees and high walls above which protrude the spires of distant palaces. You turn off the main road to meander down a lane that appears to end abruptly at a pair of wrought-iron gates. Behind them, you glimpse two elegant limestone buildings, the shape and colour of blocks of unsalted butter. ‘The house doesn’t really have a name,’ says Castellane. ‘But we call it Le Bonbon.’ Standing at an upstairs window, half-hidden behind a swaying curtain of Virginia creeper, is a curly-haired little boy. He is dressed all in white and has a pair of binoculars held to…
