letter from the editor

“You make the world come alive. You make the world colourful. You are the inspiration behind all that happens. You are the pillar of strength to many around you, the centrifugal force of your own little world…” THESE WORDS OF an India-born United Arab Emirates author, poet, and entrepreneur, Deeba Salim Irfan, echo the thoughts that run in my own head. Not to claim that we are better or stronger, or high-achieving multi-taskers, but it is true that, in more ways than one, the woman is invincible. The March issue of Travel + Leisure India & South Asia is extra special, because it’s dedicated to all the women in the world who are thinkers, go-getters, and explorers. For our cover shoot this month, we took groundbreaking actor Radhika Apte, who appeals to…

1 IONIAN ISLANDS, GREECE Greece has around 6,000 islands. Unlike Santorini and Mykonos that are part of the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Islands lie off the country’s west coast, in the Ionian Sea. Turquoise waters, cliff-backed sandy beaches, and mild Mediterranean climate make these islands ideal for a sailing holiday. While the northern island of Corfu has a gorgeous old town boasting Rennaissance, Baroque, and classical architecture, Zakynthos is home to some of the country’s most beautiful sandy beaches, including Navagio Beach, which is accessible only by boat. Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands. Here, you can explore picturesque fishing villages and satiate your hunger for adventure—dive 40 kilometres down in crystal clear waters, go kayaking along the scenic coastline, hike in Mt Ainos National…

the business of flying

WHEN YOU THINK of long-haul flights, cramped legs and crummy food come to mind. With Emirates Business Class, however, journeys become much more than a means to an end. The experience begins well before you board your flight, with a chauffeur-driven car taking you to the airport. In Dubai, this ride takes the form of a BMW 5 series. With a sunroof, Wi-Fi, and cosy leather seats, the airport ride segues seamlessly into the in-flight experience. Upon reaching the airport, a quick and smooth security-check leads you to one of the Business Class Lounges. Inside the Emirates Business Class Lounge, the cacophony of the airport dies down, allowing you to enjoy some quiet time before embarking on your journey. While here, you can choose to catch up on the news, stay connected…

HAVING HEARD so much about Qatar Airways Business Class, it was only natural that I was most excited about the airtime more than the destination. The prospect of a long-haul journey, between Doha and Gothenburg, didn’t seem all that daunting on a flat bed. The perks of flying Qatar Airways Business Class begin long before you step on the plane, with priority check-in, dedicated security counters, and an all access pass to Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge. Designed to mirror a resort experience, the 10,000-square-metre lounge offers luxuriously appointed shower rooms, quiet rooms for a quick nap, private family areas with leather couches and widescreen TVs, private workstations fitted with personal display screens and complimentary Wi-Fi, a game room, and a garden dining area. All food and drinks at the lounge…

glory of the past

I HAVE OFTEN WONDERED what it would be like to live in a fort on top of a hill, looking at the Lego-sized scenery below. At Alila Fort Bishangarh, a 230-year-old fort-turned-heritage property perched on a granite hill, I finally put my curiosity to rest. After a road trip of about four hours from Delhi, the resplendent edifice of the property came into view. Every part of the fort harks back to the regal lifestyle of the erstwhile maharajas and highlights the intricacies of planning and implementation. A total of 59 rooms are spread across five categories on each floor of the nine-storey property, and they are the perfect blend of tradition, luxury, and modernity. A buggy took me to the fort, through a driveway flanked by an amazing view of the village…
