GIRFALCO’S CANADIAN SUPERTRIKE Girfalco, a company based in Quebec in Canada, has launched a new three-wheeled supertrike called the Azkarra. The Azkarra is offered in two versions. First up is a regular model with a single 100bhp electric motor and rearwheel drive. Then there’s the ferocious Azkarra S that has 301bhp courtesy of three motors, one in each of the three wheels – which means it’s also three-wheel drive. It’s lightweight (under 500kg in single-motor form) so it will sprint to 60mph in 4.5 seconds, while the Azkarra S takes just 2.5 seconds. The ‘S’ will also reach a top speed of 162mph. Mark Reynolds is an HVAC engineer for the railway. As you can see, he’s firmly taken his sights beyond ‘iron horses’ and towards ‘golden trikes’ with this stunning-looking GoldWing rhapsody in gold and black. “The trike is called Salamander, which is known as the alchemists’ lizard,” says Mark. “Inspired by alchemists who tried turning lead into gold, I’ve taken a rusty chop and turned it into a magnificent golden trike. “I’ve been into anything to do with bikes for as long as I can remember and especially chops,” he says. “I’ve owned this 1977 GoldWing GL1000 since 1992, initially as a standard bike, and I attended many rallies on it until I had a big ‘off ’. The big-wheel bagger look has become a big thing in the bike scene in recent times. As far as we’re aware, what you see here is probably the world’s first big-wheel Harley bagger trike. And we think it looks great. It’s the work of German bike shop, Rick’s Motorcycles (named after company founder, Rick Selbst). Based in Baden- Baden, it’s well known for its high-grade custom motorcycle parts and wheels. It also builds complete custom bikes, low-riders, choppers – and now trikes. It started with a standard Harley Tri- Glide and basically applied its existing Touring Bagger Frame Conversion to the three-wheeler. As a kid, I wanted to be a car designer. I would sit for hours drawing cars and bikes and never get tired of it. I visited the Art Center in Pasadena, California while in high school – to many, the best transportation design programme in the world. But even if I were one of the handful of students accepted each year, the expense seemed impossible to cover. I never lost that dream, though. In 1997, my father and I began designing and distributing aftermarket parts for Harleys under the brand name Wicked Image. My father had a lifetime of knowledge in engineering and manufacturing and has been my mentor from the beginning. How many times have we heard this story? A trike gets half-way through its build, stalls and then has to be finished off by someone else. Predictably, it would have been far easier to start from scratch but hey – it wouldn’t have such a good story to tell, would it? So let’s start at the beginning, with the owners of this amazing machine: Mike and Jan Fisher. Mike’s an environmental consultant, while Jan works part-time in a school.
