Celeste Barber became one of the unlikely heroes of the Australian bushfire crisis in January when her fundraiser was the largest in Facebook’s history. Despite having a target of $30,000, Barber raked in more than $51 million from more than 1.3 million people worldwide. The 38-year-old nominated the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Brigades Donation Fund to receive the funds but many – including Celeste herself – hoped the “unprecedented amount” could be split across other organisations.
