This week has served up some good news, as young Aussie academic Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert has finally been released from an Iranian prison after 804 traumatic days (turn to page 12 to read about her emotional homecoming). It’s been a tough year for the entertainment industry, but the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts were determined to end the year on a high note with their 10th annual awards ceremony. Despite two rather pared-back shows compared to previous years due to COVID-19 restrictions, the events on November 30 still highlighted the amazing talent that Australia has to offer in the film and TV space. It was ladies’ night at the events, with female-led productions Babyteeth and ABC series Stateless – which Cate Blanchett co-created, co-executive produced and co-starred in – dominating with a whopping 22 awards between them. A young Australian academic is back on home soil after “a long and traumatic ordeal” that saw her spend 804 days in an Iranian prison. Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert was jailed in September 2018 and tried in secret, after being accused of espionage – charges which she has strenuously denied since her arrest. She was sentenced to 10 years in Iran’s Evin Prison but was released on November 26, thanks to Australian officials who worked tirelessly to secure her freedom. “She is still processing, but I’ve got to say the sound of her voice and the tone of her voice was very uplifting, particularly given what she has been through. Australian journalist Peter Greste, who was imprisoned for more than a year in Egypt, has warned that Moore-Gilbert will never have a normal life following her release.“You have changed, the people around you have changed, the world has changed, and it’s just impossible to go back to the life you had before,” Greste, 54, said on Sunrise.“That is on top of all of the really dark, complex emotions that she is going to be going through as she processes the really traumatic time she has spent inside that Iranian cell.”…
