No-one is, of course, immortal, but for some reason, perhaps because Queen Elizabeth II had reigned for 70 years, it somehow seemed impossible to imagine a time when she wouldn’t be our monarch. So when the news came through that she’d died peacefully at home at her beloved Balmoral Castle in the early hours of September 9 our time, the shock and sadness I felt was echoed by many across the world.
