hello! amazing plants that heal

As you may have guessed by now I am a keen, if not competent, gardener. Despite my best efforts, I seem to lose plants every year, but at least it gives me the opportunity to visit the local nursery and treat myself to something new. One of the plants that has survived so far is my lovely rosemary. I add it to my roast potatoes when making Sunday lunch and find its aromatic scent makes the whole house smell marvellous. Now I’ve discovered it’s also one of the plants that can be used for medicinal purposes. From page 34 we have rounded up other plants that heal – and I’m definitely planning to add some to my garden this summer. Our book of the week Fancy a great feel-good read? Then try…

Oh, we do love to be beside… My husband loves the seaside but we’re quite a long way from the beach, so he’s brought the coast to us. How wonderful! Mary Hayes, London Paws for thought This is our Teddy. He’s such a good boy and makes me smile every day! Jean Clarke, Manchester Where I read mine I have been reading the English Woman’s Weekly for over 30 years with much enjoyment, especially the travel and cookery articles. My husband and l spend a lot of our time at our holiday home at Wye River (a small town on the coast), and here I am, enjoying reading my WW at the beach. Liz Booth, Australia ✿ We’d love to see where you read your copy of Woman’s Weekly. The more exotic the location, the better! Words of wisdom Like…

gardeners’ questions

QI love blue hydrangeas –which variety would you recommend? A For the best blue colour, choose a good variety, such as Blue Danube, and grow it on acid (ericaceous) soil. In fact, acidity itself doesn’t affect colour, it’s the aluminum in the soil, but that can only be absorbed by the plant under acid conditions. This has given rise to the age-old claim that if you bury rusty metal around the roots, the flowers will turn blue! You don’t have to do anything so extreme. Just use annual applications of hydrangea colourant. Q Do you have any tips on using edible flowers? A Check blooms are not poisonous, are pest- and disease-free and haven’t been sprayed with chemicals. Use fully open, fresh blooms, and remove the centre pistil and stamens, white heels on coloured…

what you’re wearing

Nia Prydderch, 45 Tell us about your look… My dress is a recent buy from Monsoon – I loved the colour. My trainers are Adidas and my bag is Mulberry. My favourite store is Anthropologie. They always have clothes that are a little bit different. At the moment we don’t have a store in Cardiff but I usually treat myself when I’m in London! And the best bit of your body? My eyes. Helen Merrifield, 51 Tell us about your look… Well, the only new item I have on is my stripy T-shirt, which is from Topshop. I bought my Dune sandals a few months back.
