When I was a young boy we usually had a big family meal on Sundays, and more often than not – at least in my memory – we finished the meal with a milky dessert called Instant Whip, which my brother and I absolutely loved. It was simple to make and my busy mum (men didn’t really seem to cook as much in those days) probably found it an easy solution for keeping us little ones happy. However, it started a lifelong love of puddings, so as I likely burn off a lot less energy than I did when I was eight, I’m looking forward to trying the recipes on page 24. They are all lovely… but low-calorie. Yum. A GARDEN STAR Hydrangeas are one of my favourite garden plants as they…

come on inside!

Where I read mine Here I am, reading my Woman’s Weekly while visiting our son in New Brunswick, Canada, earlier this year – the lupins there grow like wild flowers. I have read the magazine for nearly 50 years. As a child, I even remember my best friend’s grandmother reading it. I liked it even then! Judith Dear, Somerset ✿ We’d love to see where you read your copy of Woman’s Weekly. The more exotic the location, the better! Love the mag My late mother always bought Woman’s Weekly and read it from cover to cover before passing it on to a neighbour. I wonder if she’s looking down on me and seeing I’m following in her footsteps? WW has everything I need – fashion, health tips and lots of lovely stories. Sylvia Foster, Yorkshire Motivational! Thank you for…

in the garden this week

SOW THIS ✿ SUMMER MAY BE OVER BUT YOU CAN SOW SALADS such as mustard ‘golden streaks’, winter purslane, pak choi red and lamb’s lettuce in 20cm (8in) pots or in short rows in window boxes. Thin out overcrowded seedlings when they’re about 2.5cm (1in) tall. DIG THIS ✿ LIFTING AND DIVIDING RHUBARB is an easy task to complete and autumn is the ideal time to carry it out. Once dividing is complete, water the plants well. Leave the foliage to die back naturally and return nutrients to the crown, then remove them and add them to the compost heap. PLANT THIS ✿ THIS IS THE KEY TIME TO LAY TURF as the frost-free weeks of autumn provide the ‘golden hours’ and, as long as your soil isn’t waterlogged or frozen, turves should quickly knit…

This is my son’s Staffie Rosie, enjoying the sun. She’s such a loving girl, and adored by all the family! She has a mark on her chest that looks like a little dog! Can you spot it? Rita Hubble, Devon We often have some rather different pets here in Australia. Being close to bushland, we regularly get visits from our wild friends. Bluey, the blue-tongue lizard, loves some dry cat food! Carol Hill, Tasmania I received this very special message from my gorgeous dog Fluffy. It really makes me smile every time I see it. Louise Milne, West Sussex ✿ Got a pet pic that makes you smile? We can give it a good home…

This black-and-white photo of me was taken in Scarborough, when I was 17 years old –we wore ankle socks to keep the boys away! what you’re wearing

Carol Coogan, 69 Tell us about your look… I like to look co-ordinated, even just to pop to the garden centre for a coffee. I love shades of blue in summer. My dress is M&S, my sandals came from Florida and my bag from Tenerife – I like to shop on holiday! My daughter gave me my pearl necklace. My Fitbit watch is colour co-ordinated, of course! And the best bit of your body? My hair. I used to be a hairdresser, so I’m very fussy! Rachel Thomas, 55 Tell us about your look… My dress is by Great Plains. I spotted it in the sale at a store called Maze, in Bath. I liked it so much, I bought another one in blue! My strappy sandals are French and my red bag is by Coach. I…
