I was lucky enough to grow up in an era when land was affordable and, as a result, my parents had a section in Cook’s Beach in the Coromandel, where we often camped and caravanned. We had a love-filled, no-frills upbringing with no iPads, fancy gadgets, expensive activities or overseas holidays. Weekends at the section meant we were in the bush, water, tent or trees rather than in trouble (although it still managed to find us at times). My brothers and I developed a deep love of the land, which had a profound effect on our childhood and, I believe, influenced who we are today.
