Southern Home (SH): Would you begin by sharing a bit about your background? Jackye Lanham (JL): I’m what we used to call an army brat. We moved every couple of years, internationally and around the South. No matter where we were, a pair of twin beds and a steamer trunk full of my treasures came along with me. I’d shove the beds around into whatever configuration in my new bedroom and constantly rearrange my dolls and things. If the adage “every dog has his day” is anything to go by, it was inevitable that dogs would become as celebrated in the realm of decorative arts as they are in real life. From sporting pictures to needlepoint pillows, dogs have featured prominently in a variety of mediums, especially ceramics, and of the many canine forms that have been modeled over the centuries, there are two types in particular that have captured the hearts of generations of collectors: Meissen pugs and Staffordshire spaniels. Like porcelain, pugs can trace their roots back centuries to China, where the wide-eyed breed was a favorite at the Imperial Court. Later introduced to Europe by Dutch traders in the sixteenth century, pugs became the “it” lapdog among seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European nobility, particularly in Holland…

When a Texas couple imagined building a new property that would provide a home base for their extended family, they set their sights on a rambling stretch of Alabama land called Wash Creek Farm. Located on 1,200 acres just 45 minutes south of Birmingham, the property is a scenic combination of pastureland with ponds and rolling hills backdropped by pine and hardwood forests. The land also boasts two miles of shoreline on Wash Creek, a tributary that feeds into Lay Lake. The homeowners wanted their property to include not only the main residence but also a barn, guesthouse, skeet shooting range, greenhouse and garden, boathouse, and a caretaker’s cottage.
