top of the order

SECOND TO NONE: His German surname means “good deed” or “beautiful service.” And in the span of his 95 years of life, no one gave more to the Cardinals than Albert “Red” Schoendienst. The native of nearby Germantown, Ill., passed away on June 6, just as Cardinals Magazine went to press. Over his 71 years in the organization, Red was a World Series champion as a Cardinals player (1946), manager (1967) and coach (1964, 1982). He impacted countless careers as a baseball-lifer and generations of fans with his gentle, endearing approachability. In our next issue, we’ll salute Red’s 77 years in baseball and a life lived The Cardinal Way. ■…

style that’s swagnificent

When I was in elementary school, my grandma bought me some Air Jordans and Grant Hill basketball shoes that were so cool, I’d color-coordinate my outfits to make sure they were noticed. You could say that jump-started my interest in fashion.Nowadays, you won’t get much argument from my teammates – or you shouldn’t, anyway – that I’m the best-dressed on the club. I had been in the big leagues only a short while when veteran Jhonny Peralta told me I dressed like I’d been there for 10 years. Because I thought so highly of the way he dressed – very professional – the compliment meant a lot.Miles Mikolas will tell you we have a sharply dressed team, but I’m not so sure. I will say I really like Miles’ suit game.…

marcell ozuna

Ozuna draws inspiration from the late Jose Fernandez and honors his former Marlins teammate before each game, etching “JDF 16” into the dirt beyond first or third base.In September 2016, shock and grief pierced the baseball world when talented Miami Marlins righthander Jose Fernandez died in a boating accident at 24 years old.Few players were more affected than teammate Marcell Ozuna. Even after being traded to the Cardinals this offseason, he referenced their friendship and bond during his introductory phone call with local reporters and at his first onsite media session of the spring. The connection endures as Ozuna has settled in to a new clubhouse and new surroundings in St. Louis. He pays tribute to Fernandez every game he plays, continuing a tradition he began in Miami. As he trots out…

the waiting game of free agency

“The freedom to choose what’s best for a player’s family is a benefit of free agency, but we also had to weigh it against what’s best for Dexter’s career. In the end, it’s all about finding that sweet spot.”Editor’s note: Aliya and Dexter Fowler met in 2010 when Dexter was on a rehab assignment with the Colorado Rockies’ Triple-A affiliate. Cardinals Magazine asked Aliya to share her reflections on the free-agent process, which the Fowlers went through following the 2015 and 2016 seasons. When Dexter became a free agent, I quickly was reminded that while baseball is my husband’s passion, it’s also his profession. You go into the process looking for a perfect match with the perfect team, but much of it is out of your control. Despite what some fans may…

francisco peña

Stat I use most to evaluate my performance: Catcher’s ERA. I want a low ERA so pitchers feel comfortable with me. That is more important than what I do on offense. I’d rather go 0-for-4 with a W than 4-for-4 with a loss.Overrated baseball stat: All of them are important in some way. You can learn something from every one.If I could ask one former player anything, I’d ask: My dad (longtime big-league catcher Tony Peña, a Cardinal from 1987-89) what his greatest game was. Actually, I have asked him. He said it was the walk-off homer he hit for Cleveland in the 1995 playoffs (13th inning, vs. Boston, Game 1 ALDS). I talk to my dad every day but now it’s not about baseball – it’s about his grandkids.…
