People often ask me how we decide what car will be the Road Tour vehicle each year. Generally we tend to follow the current trends in our hobby. Back in the early years of the Road Tours we were driving what, in looking back, we would consider traditional street rods. Our first Road Tour car was the famous ’33-’34 style Tour Coupe. Its distinctive paintjob of blue with white racing stripes drew attention that entire first year of 1996. The Blue Skunk, as it is now called, is owned by Debbie Walls and she still puts miles on it regularly. Magazine car guys, while deeply invested in the daily goings-on about our hobby/industry, are also interested in magazines. The history of car magazines; the first car magazine; the first event; the first tech story; the first car feature; the first project car. While most of us are rooted in our respective brands, and to a lesser degree what has or is happening throughout the industry with our rivals and sister publications, every now and then up crops a bit of history heretofore gone unnoticed. For starters, I think I may have found the first magazine project car. Or at the very least the first homebuilt hot rod assembled via the installments in a consumer-based magazine. Custom Continental Wins Winfield Award Getting ready for the 2019 car show season, we think back on our favorite street rods from 2018. Chris and Lori Ryan’s ’56 Lincoln Continental Mark II got our attention at the Detroit Autorama, where it was a STREET RODDER/Painless Performance Products Top 100 winner and a Pirelli Great 8 finalist for the Ridler Award. At the Syracuse Nationals, this ’60s-style show custom, aka “Scarlet Lady,” won the prestigious Winfield Award, established by legendary builder Gene Winfield to recognize excellence in the custom car world. I’ll be completely honest with you, the first time I saw Dave Robb’s roadster I had a hard time with the particular choice of colors. To me, they evoked somewhat of a kitschy ’50s style more suitably worn in conjunction with wide whites and full-disc’ caps. That, however, didn’t detour my opinion of the Deuce in its overall form in a negative direction, and as I once again admired the craftsmanship I’ve come to expect from Moal Coachbuilders, I began forming a hypothesis based on both color and shape. We’ve all heard the phrase “life imitating art,” but what about the exact opposite, art imitating life? That can be found in everything from marketing graphic design to modern realistic tattoos. The imitation doesn’t stop there, as the art most definitely can and will further influence real life. Brian Stinger is an Indianapolis-based hot rod builder/artist. When you combine those elements of location and vocation, it’s easy to see where his inspiration comes from. Back in 2005, Stinger had submitted a Dream Car of the Month to the unfortunately now-defunct Rod & Custom magazine.
