I have noticed a great deal of discord in my (our) daily life over the past decade and while I sometimes chalk it up to “that’s life” the fact remains … it’s not fun. I find myself paying less attention to what’s going on around me (not good) and paying more attention to what’s going on in my own garage or that of my rodding buddies (very good). PREMIUM ROD OF THE MONTH Old-timers out there can remember seeing cars like Scott Gillen’s ’35 Ford coupe photographed in black and white. There’s a certain quality to vintage black and white photos that appeals to anybody with a taste for nostalgia. The same can be said for this striking three-window, the latest Brizio-built car in Scott’s 22-car collection. The coupe made its debut in the Roy Brizio Street Rods display at the 2018 Grand National Roadster Show—but until you start looking closely, there isn’t much about this car that would convince you it hasn’t been around since the early days of hot rodding. taking a bite out of steering problems

Over the years street rodders have used a variety of updated steering components in their cars, and one of the common complications when doing so was installing the steering shaft. Seldom was there a straight shot from the steering column to the steering gear as there always seemed to be something in the way—from the engine itself to the exhaust system, oil filter, starter, or some other immovable object. Of course for every problem there is a solution, however, some steering shaft solutions in the ’60-’70s were accidents waiting to happen. We once saw a U-joint from a 1/2-inch drive socket set being used in a steering shaft and industrial power takeoff U-joints that weren’t much better were tried by some. You’ve probably heard the phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover” and it couldn’t be more true when you see Larry Birdsong’s ’26 Ford pickup. This “book” might appear simple on the outside, but pop that hood side off and it’s like the workings of an Apollo rocket underneath. Larry is both a retired aerospace machine shop manager and mechanical engineer and, at 70 years old, has liked Model T trucks since he was 14. Living in Prescott Valley, Arizona, Larry spent 17 years perfecting his little black truck, recently debuting it at the Detroit Autorama.
