for starters

♦ I found myself reading an article the other day about the best car shows in the country. Now, this article dealt with more than rod runs the way you and I might think of a car show. It was about car shows in general, such as indoor, outdoor, restoration, modified, and new car shows. For starters, I was pleasantly surprised to find this readers’ poll had a Top 10 dedicated to the Best Car Shows in the country. The judging panel was derived from USA Today readers’ choices. Since I wasn’t one of the readers who voted I’m not sure where, when, or how these readers were accumulated and how or why they voted. But the fact remains the world of hot rodding did very well.Of the Top 10 list…

(PHOTO BY JULIA LAPALME)2019 Road Tour Car First LookAs the 2018 United Pacific/STREET RODDER Road Tour ’32 Ford pickup cruises across America, work is underway on the 2019 car. We called Troy Ladd at Hollywood Hot Rods, builder of two previous Road Tour cars, to discuss building another, maybe a ’55 or ’56 Ford. “Funny you should mention it,” he said. Not long before, Troy had purchased several neglected cars from an estate in Pasadena, including this stock ’55 Ford Customline Tudor sedan. The Y-block engine ran, but the car hadn’t moved since it went into hibernation 50 years ago.As this is written, the Customline is at Roadster Shop in Illinois, where a custom chassis is being fabricated. Other project choices haven’t been made yet, but STREET RODDER readers will be…

four-cam conquest

More than 70 years ago, Zora Arkus-Duntov and his brother, Yura, developed the hemispherical overhead-valve cylinder head for the Ford Flathead. Known as the ARDUN head, it radically altered the performance capability of the engine, offering a dramatic increase in horsepower that was due not only to greater airflow, but an increase in the effective engine speed, which allowed it to make more power at high rpm. It’s that same quest for high-rpm horsepower that pushed Mercury Racing (a division of Mercury Marine) to develop the SB4 7.0 engine; an automotive crate engine that, in a nutshell, uses a GM LS foundation (the LS7 cylinder block) with an all-new, custom-designed set of four-valve, dual overhead camshaft cylinder heads. The result is a naturally aspirated LS-based engine that spins to 8,000 rpm and…
