timeless traditions

Many were started by my great-grandparents, while others were added over the years. One year, after learning how to make ravioli, my mother decided we’d make hundreds of them on Christmas Eve day. We’d gorge on them for dinner and freeze the rest to enjoy all year long. This tradition lasted almost 20 years. One tradition I try to observe every year is to make fruitcake—one that people won’t turn their noses up at. I’ve been pretty successful with it so far, but this year, I think I’ve come up with the best one yet. I combined fruitcake with my favorite upside-down cake recipe to create a delicious mashup, and everyone who’s tried it has loved it (page 48). Candy Cane Chocolate Mini Loaves I used leftover candy canes to add peppermint flair to chocolate bread.—Shelly Platten, Amherst, WI Prep: 25 min. • Bake: 35 min. + cooling Makes: 8 mini loaves (6 slices each) ¼ cup butter, softened1⅔ cups packed brown sugar4 large egg whites, room temperature2 large eggs, room temperature¾ cup strong brewed coffee½ cup vanilla yogurt¼ cup canola oil1 Tbsp. vanilla extract¼ tsp. peppermint extract3½ cups all-purpose flour¾ cup baking cocoa1½ tsp. baking soda½ tsp. salt1½ cups buttermilk1 cup (6 oz.) miniature semisweet chocolate chips TOPPING 2 oz. white baking chocolate, melted3 Tbsp. crushed candy canes 1.
