THE HOCKEY NEWS: One of your big recent projects was the book about former NHLer Joe Murphy and his struggles with concussions. What was it about that story that compelled you? RICK WESTHEAD: We had done a documentary on Joe for TSN, but how much justice can you do for a person’s life in a 15-minute TV piece? This is a complicated guy, and it’s a complicated story. I wanted to understand more about Joe’s journey through life, not just his NHL life. And the bigger reason to do it was that I had done all kinds of reporting on the NHL emails (on concussions) and how the league’s private behavior jibes with what it says publicly. This was an opportunity to memorialize and really document what the executives at the…

GRAEME ROUSTAN: Tell me a little bit more about the team you have that puts on all these events for the NHL. STEVE MAYER: I had a unique position, because I had worked with the NHL, many of the faces when I walked in the door, I knew already. Maybe I didn’t know their capabilities, but I certainly knew them, and we had worked together. But when I came in, my focus was more on content. And one of the things I recognized was we were a little lean. So I went and I said, “Listen, we’ve got to expand the team.” I think when I started, we had five people in our production content business. And now we’re up to close to 40 people. Some of them I brought over…

OWNERSHIP TYPE ‘A’ HASSO PLATTNER THE CO-FOUNDER OF business software giant SAP, Hasso Plattner, 76, has been the Sharks’ majority owner since 2010. Plattner reportedly owns 5.9 percent of SAP, which is one of the NHL’s most prominent corporate partners. Forbes listed Plattner’s worth at $14.7 billion, up from $14.4 billion last year. As one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, Plattner has been able to give the Sharks’ hockey operations and business departments broad financial flexibility. Born in Germany, Plattner saw the Soviet Union dominate international hockey throughout the 1970s and ’80s. Then in 1993 while on a business trip to the Bay Area, his past and future collided, as he watched Sergei Makarov and Igor Larionov play for the Sharks, the team he became part-owner of in 2002. Plattner is one of…

GRAEME ROUSTAN: Going back to the first phone call when you said, “OK, let’s talk about a jersey for Seattle,” how did you approach that? It’s a massive undertaking, how did Adidas approach that? DAN NEAR: I’m glad you asked, because this is a story a lot of people want to hear. We have a track record of working on names, identity and uniform as a package. And the Golden Knights is one, the journey was totally different, but we had done this literally three or four years ago with Mr. (Bill) Foley, in a much different environment. It was very much a one-, two- or three-person team in Vegas that was making the decisions, where the Seattle group had plenty more stakeholders. Seattle was not obligated to start with us. We…

OWNERSHIP TYPE ‘A’ JOHN P. McCONNELL WITHIN THE BLUE Jackets, majority owner John P. McConnell is described as “supportive” and “appropriately hands-off.” While present at almost every home game, you’d be hard-pressed to catch a glimpse of him within the confines of Nationwide Arena, as he leaves the inner workings to his business and hockey heads. But don’t think McConnell isn’t engaged. He holds regular meetings with team president Mike Priest and GM Jarmo Kekalainen, and hosts an annual team gathering at his home prior to each season’s start. And just as McConnell has led by making space for his staff to lead within his hockey club, he recently made a similar choice in his professional career. In the summer, McConnell stepped down as CEO of Worthington Industries, a global metal manufacturer founded…

detroit red wings

OWNERSHIP TYPE ‘D’ MARIAN ILITCH WHEN MIKE AND Marian Ilitch purchased the Red Wings in 1982, the club was a bottom-feeder. Together, they turned Detroit into the model NHL franchise. Under their ownership, the Wings have won 16 divisional championships, six Presidents’ Trophies and four Stanley Cups. The Ilitch family has turned to the captain of three of those Cup champions to again return the club to glory. Steve Yzerman was hired as GM in 2019. Ilitch didn’t realize working as a young girl in her father’s restaurant was preparing for her future. Mike and Marian turned Little Caesars into the world’s largest carry-out pizza chain with restaurants in all 50 U.S. states and more than 20 countries. The Iltiches bought venerable Fox Theater in 1987, restoring the facility to its 1920s splendor…
