Anxiety is the root cause of Selective Mutism. And Selective Mutism is a mental illness. The child cannot control it. You cannot cure it. Your student's parents are your greatest resource. I have a form included in this PDF for a parent of a child with SM to fill out. The parent can give you an idea of how much the child speaks (if at all) and other triggers of anxiety.
