For lots of people, summertime is for lounge chairs and lazy weekends. But I’m a northerner, which means I’m cooped up inside for almost half the year. For Royalty Necklace I love to play with colors and patterns using Delica beads, creating jewelry to match my clothes. The colorway in my necklace was selected to coordinate with my favorite jacket, and I feel like a princess when I wear it. After the pendant section of the necklace was complete, I used turquoise beads, Swarovski crystals, metal heishis, Delicas, and seed beads for fringe and to attach the smaller components to the pendant. Then I embellished the smaller components with additional beadwork patterns to give it dimension. Graffiti. Just the word conjures up conflicting images. Inner city decay, gangs, and vandalism. Or residents beautifying their neighborhoods, appreciated public art, and edgy humor. But when the paint chips of former graffiti murals crumble off building walls, most people would see it as refuse. Not Amy Peterson. Q I’m interested in getting a marudai. What should I look for? A When purchasing or making a marudai (ma-ru-dye), the most important part is the wooden top of the marudai. The mirror, or Kagami (Japanese) as the top is called, should have a velvety surface so it lightly grips the warp cords without grabbing them. The mirror should NOT be varnished. Over time, climate may cause variations on the surface, especially at a seam or the outer edge. The mirror can be lightly sanded with 400-grit sandpaper or fine steel wool. fordite, often called “Detroit Agate” or “Motor Agate,” has been made into stunning jewelry pieces, but it’s really an industrial artifact from the automotive factories in Detroit, Michigan. Years ago, a car frame would be spray-painted by hand by plant workers. The multiple colors and layers of hardened paint would build up on the tracks and skids below. The car bodies moved onward on the assembly line into ovens where the paint was cured, and the layers hardened even more. Over time, this “slag” became heavy and thick, and had to be removed. There are lots of stories in Motor City about automotive plant workers who saw beauty in this industrial by-product and took it home.
