The recent fire that swept through the UCT campus, then spread westward along the mountain, posed a threat to my neighbourhood and an even greater threat to three of the adjoining neighbourhoods, whose residents were forced to evacuate.
The many firefighters "on the line", did a magnificent job of fighting the fire throughout the day and night, without help from the usual fire suppression helicopters, grounded due to high winds and poor visibility.
By dawn of the second day, the winds had died and soon, the morning silence was broken by the distinctive "whop, whop" of many choppers hauling buckets of water…
