Captivated by mehndi—the application of symbolic designs on hands and feet using henna—we embellished garden pots with painted dots, lines, vines, leaves, paisley, and other simple patterns that give a patio distinctive style. Stencils ease the process and enable more exotic effects as well as customized designs. THIS PHOTO: To create this bold pattern, coat a flat-sided container with white exterior paint and let it dry.
