Yangon: Seventy Rohingya people hiding in a truck transporting ginger were arrested north of Yangon after the vehicle crashed into a roadside canal, the Myanmar junta said yesterday. THAWING of permafrost due to climate change may expose a store of ancient viruses, according to European researchers who say they found 13 previously unknown pathogens that were trapped in previously frozen ground in Siberia, Russia. They found one virus they estimated had been stranded under a lake more than 48 500 years ago, highlighting a potential danger from a warming planet and so-called “zombie” viruses. The team previously isolated ancient viruses from the permafrost and published their findings in 2015. Two suspects, one of whom is wanted for other crimes, were arrested after police received a tip-off that they were about to carry out a farm attack in Vryheid on Saturday. MAIDUGURI: Gunmen in Nigeria killed a dozen worshippers, including an imam, and kidnapped several others from a mosque, local residents said yesterday, in the latest attack by armed gangs in the north of the country.
