legal ease

It all began on a tennis court, when two mothers met, hit it off, and forged a working relationship that has endured for years. Interior designer Susan Bohlert Smith was watching her then-preteen daughter, Bo Massey. Annice Steinhart was there cheering on her daughter, Fallin, 11 at the time, who was lobbing balls with Bo at a Rosemary Beach Racquet Club tennis clinic in Florida. Not long after meeting the designer, Annice and her husband, Lance, who reside in the suburbs of Atlanta, were interviewing her about a weekend getaway home they planned to build in Water-Sound, Florida. Southern-bred Bohlert Smith “scored” by combining a neutral palette with oodles of texture to create a stunning retreat with far-reaching views of sand and water for the couple and Fallin, who recently turned…

our designers say…

| “19th Century Campaign Iron Canopy Bed” by RH I love the grand statement of this bed, and the idea that it has its roots in the British military (although I can’t imagine it’s very practical setting this piece up in a field!). I would use it in the center of a bedroom—it’s so sculptural that it demands to be seen from all angles. —Adam Hunter, West Hollywood | “Campaign Side Table” by Williams-Sonoma Home This piece is stylish but simple, the kind of piece that can grow with someone. I’d love it in a young boy’s room, paired with graphic storybook illustrations. —Lauren Geremia, Emeryville, California | “Jet Set Desk” by Jonathan Adler The navy and white colors of this desk/vanity are crisp and elegant, and the brass accents look super chic against the trunk-inspired texture.…

pet delights

Animal House Actress and animal activist Denise Richards—shown here with her rescue pooch, Scooter—has always had a soft spot for dogs. “I don’t remember ever not being an animal lover,” she says. Since 2009, the mom of three children has served as an ambassador for the Best Friends Animal Society (bestfriends.org), where she participates in the organization’s Pup My Ride program, transporting at-risk dogs from L.A.’s overcrowded shelter system to other locations where they are fostered and adopted. “Sometimes they stay here and become part of our family,” says Richards, who converted her Calabasas estate’s original garage into a dog room with the help of designer Kara Smith. Featuring six stalls and a small common area, the soothing retreat serves as a sanctuary for both pets and people. For more information, see sources…

third time’s a charm

Front porches make for all types of friendly encounters. And sometimes they are a starting point for long-term professional associations. More than a decade ago, as Jacqueline and Robb Brown were settling into a cottage in the Gulf Coast resort of WaterColor, Florida, the couple admired a unique swinging bed on a neighbor’s sleeping porch. A few days later, Robb met the designer of the house by chance and inquired about the daybed. The designer was Georgia Carlee. The rest, as they say, is history. Carlee helped the Browns with finishing touches for their first cottage. Soon after, Jacqueline and Robb found a slightly larger house in the neighborhood, and again turned to Carlee for design advice. “We hit it off immediately, and everything came together just as I imagined,” Jacqueline…
