CHRISTMAS always brings its own special kind of magic. There’s the sparkling tree, the brightly wrapped gifts, the tempting treats, and, best of all, shared moments with special people. It’s a joy being invited to a gathering at the home of a friend who just seems to embody holiday spirit—a person like Matthew Patrick Smyth. Yes, he’s a supremely talented designer, but Matthew knows that there are a lot more important things than perfectionism, especially during the holidays. “I don’t think you should overstudy Christmas,” he says. “The main thing is to have fun with it. Don’t worry about good taste—just go for it. Christmas gives you license to decorate.” Matthew makes use of that license at his country house in Sharon, Connecticut, a 1790 Colonial that lends itself to a traditional…

ARTEMEST Beauty, Ippolita Rostagno believes, shouldn’t be reserved for special occasions. That’s the guiding principle for her eponymous fi ne jewelry company and for her new brainchild, Artemest—an online marketplace of luxury home decor, jewelry, and fi ne arts pieces by Italian artisans. “It was born,” she says, “to arouse and celebrate a desire for beauty in our everyday lives.” More than 1,600 pieces, including the “Fossilia” gold bowl from Fos Ceramiche shown here, are off ered on the site, which showcases makers from Murano glass masters to Florentine goldsmiths. What’s more, fall brings more of his creative endeavors, from his recent Beautiful decorating book to his fabric collection with Schumacher to his upcoming vintage dhurrie-inspired rug collaboration with Merida called California Stripes. “I don’t quite know how it all happened,” the 46-year-old tastemaker says rather modestly of his meteoric rise, which mushroomed rapidly from a career in visual merchandising to the launch in 2012 of his eponymous interiors firm. But he does believe people gravitate toward his style because they feel it is authentic. As he heads off in all sorts of creative…
