@TVGMMattRoush ABC’s The Conners should be renamed The Darlene Show. Why does the show revolve almost entirely around Darlene (Sara Gilbert)? Why do the other characters receive so very little screen time? Why are D.J. (Michael Fishman) and his family virtually excluded? —AN MATT ROUSH: You say this like it’s a bad thing—although I agree D.J.’s minibranch of the family is too rarely seen. (One explanation: They don’t live in Dan’s house, where most of the action is.) The way I see it is that after Roseanne’s unceremonious departure, Darlene stepped up as the show’s natural center. (It doesn’t hurt that Gilbert is one of the executive producers.) Darlene is the most like her mother in terms of sarcastic attitude and life experience as a beleaguered, and in her case single, mother.…

ANGELIC ADD I liked your “Kindred Spirits” sidebar in your Highway to Heaven article [October 25 issue, page 11], but you missed one of my favorite God-centric, feel-good shows, Joan of Arcadia. Amber Tamblyn’s portrayal of a teen who talks to (and takes assignments from) God was uplifting and a shining spot to my week. —Michal STILL STELLAR NCIS has always been one of my favorite shows. I’m disappointed about the exit of Mark Harmon [October 25 issue, page 2], but I’m really liking Gary Cole [October 25 issue, page 48]! The resilience of NCIS amazes me. They’ve lost strong characters over the years (Ziva, Tony, Abby and now Gibbs), but it’s just as good as ever! —Linda FRESH PERSPECTIVE I love the addition of Dr. Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard) on NBC’s…

When Netflix’s fantasy hit The Witcher returns for Season 2 December 17, mutant beast slayer Geralt (Henry Cavill, right) takes on new mission—fatherhood. After finally uniting with an on-the-run Princess Ciri (Freya Allan) in last season’s finale, Geralt has a renewed responsibility to her: The gruff warrior promised to protect the heir to the kingdom of Cintra before she was born. “He has decided to take this particular path and do so to the best of his ability,” Cavill says. Geralt plans to escort Ciri to his Kaer Morhen mountain fortress home so she can meet his parental figure, Vesemir (Killing Eve’s Kim Bodnia). Want more info? @TVGMMattRoush Yellowjackets They endured a calamity as teens, but adulthood has its own terrors SERIES PREMIERE Sunday, Nov. 14, 10/9c, Showtime WORDS DESIGNED TO be eaten later in regret: “As long as nobody does anything crazy, we have nothing to worry about.” Maybe Shauna (Melanie Lynskey), one of several survivors of a notorious fictional tragedy 25 years earlier, isn’t aware that Juliette Lewis—the embodiment of lunacy in so many film and TV projects—is playing one of her former companions in peril. Yellowjackets is a luridly intriguing melodrama about a statechampion team of female high-school soccer players whose dreams of national triumph crashed along with their private plane, which went down in a northern wilderness in 1996. Seemingly inspired by the 1972 crash of a Uruguayan rugby team in the Andes, the series toggles between disturbing Lord…

A Kiss Before Christmas MOVIE PREMIERE Sunday, Nov. 21, 8/7c, Hallmark Channel NEARLY A DECADE after their marriage on Desperate Housewives ended with his character, Mike Delfino, taking a bullet to the chest, James Denton phoned (and texted and emailed!) Teri Hatcher with the idea of reuniting, for the first time, in this movie that should have a decidedly happier ending: “It’s a little bit It’s a Wonderful Life, a little bit Heaven Can Wait,” says Denton, who’s also an executive producer. He stars as family man Ethan, a real estate developer who casually laments to a Santa about losing a promotion because he’s too nice of a guy…and wakes up to find he’s suddenly got the corner office. The problem? He’s no longer husband to Joyce (Hatcher) or father to their two…
