the long and the short of it finding a connection in life

WILLIE SHOEMAKER WAS always tiny. He weighed 38 ounces when he was born. He was so small at birth he was put in a shoebox and placed in an oven to stay warm. Fully grown he stood 4 feet 10 inches tall and weighed 91 pounds. Wilt Chamberlain was always gigantic. One of nine kids in his Philadelphia family, Chamberlain was 6 feet 10 inches tall when he turned 10. He would grow to be 7 feet 1 inch and weigh 300 pounds. Two men could hardly be more different, and yet so similar. Shoemaker became one of the greatest jockeys in horse racing history, winning more than 8,800 races in his 41-year career. Chamberlain became one of the greatest basketball players of all time, once scoring 100 points in an NBA game. Shoemaker…

ruby lane donates to relief fund

S AN FRANCISCO — After having a successful Ruby Red Tag Sale recently, Ruby Lane has donated $12,500 to the Feeding America’s COVID-19 Response Fund. That amount constitutes 1 percent of realized sales over the 72-hour sale. Ruby Lane, the largest curated antiques, vintage and collectibles online marketplace, said that the donated funds are to be used to support and feed those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. “This wouldn’t have been possible without the shops’ and shoppers’ eager participation and contributions. The entire Ruby Lane team is thankful for all the support it received for the “Support WINS!” Ruby Red Tag sale event,” the company said. This donation comes on the heels of Ruby Lane also turning down a six-figure Paycheck Protection Program loan because the company felt it was better to let other…

mosaic floor found under italian vineyard

NEGRAR DI VALPOLICELLA, Italy — After decades of searching, archaeologists discovered the ultimate treasure: A Roman mosaic floor under a vineyard in northern Italy. The mosaic floor from the third century (A.D. 200s) is a find historians are calling “this year’s biggest discovery.” The remarkably well-preserved and ornate flooring design is part of the remains of a Roman villa, first found back in 1922. The most recent discovery was made after “decades of failed attempts” by archaeologists to access the remains, according to a Facebook post by the town of Negrar di Valpolicella on May 26. Last summer, a team with the Superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Verona resumed excavation of the site, then returned in October 2019 and February of this year. They were forced out by the coronavirus outbreak…
