Verity Willcocks, sub editor In the past, I’ve been compared to the septuagenarian Meryl Streep (by the editor of this mag), and Nicole Kidman in The Hours (with a prosthetic nose, she didn’t look so lovely). However, I’d choose Sharon Horgan, actress and writer of Pulling and Motherland, which were like windows on my life — at different times, obviously. Dickie Beau, performer and writer My more insecure side imagines some kind of impossible heartthrob playing me in a movie. But when I honestly ask myself who might most closely capture the essence of my inner being, the name that comes out of the hat is Miriam Margolyes. And if Miriam happens to be too busy, then I’ll go for Cher. Uli Lenart, Attitude book reviewer If I can choose a dead actor, I’d go…

editor in chief’s letter

Nobody ever said life was supposed to be easy. Nobody. Ever. Shit happens to good people. Good things happen to bad people. Hell freezes over occasionally, and the stairway to heaven sometimes feels like an impossible climb. If there is a God, he’s probably a bit of a dick and has been reading The Hunger Games. But nothing lasts forever, everything ends — even the blurry lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. When Declan McKenna, our current creative genius of a cover star, was born, the world was enthused by the new millennium. Then 9/11 happened, we went to war with Afghanistan and Iraq. The Middle East was torn apart. The recession tore the rest of our lives apart. Brexit kicked off. And Donald Trump farted on the USA. Then, well… somebody ate a…

MAXWELL FINE Artist Maxwell Fine champions the queer community through his loud and proud work — and now he wants to help those of us who may be struggling during the coronavirus crisis. The Central Saint Martins graduate is donating a percentage of the sales of his typographical prints and sculptures to Switchboard, as calls to the LGBTQ+ helpline rise at this difficult time. He will continue to pay it forward until the lockdown is lifted. Turns out Maxwell also has philanthropy down to a fine art. maxwellfinestudio.co.uk switchboard.lgbt MOOT Men’s lingerie brand Moot was founded by Jules Parker, who wanted to create pieces he was struggling to find for himself. last orders?

I think it’s safe to say that the UK’s LGBTQ+ venues are facing their toughest challenge ever. Over the past decade we have seen the rise of dating and hook-up apps, which have made it much easier to meet partners without leaving home, a huge increase in rents and business rates, plus the development of areas such as Soho and Vauxhall, with many bars and clubs being turned into luxury flats or restaurants. We have survived all this and many venues were flourishing — that was, until March this year when Covid-19 forced all bars and clubs to close. “There’s more to it than money. Bars such as The RVT are a safe space” The hospitality and leisure sector is vital to the UK economy, generating cash and employing over three million people,…
