the local

TRAVELLING OVERSEAS is now commonplace for most of the down under snow crew. Whether that means a week in Japan for powder, a month in Austria for freeriding or a season in Whistler working, partying and riding a bit, we all love to travel, myself included. One thing that has always grinded my gears is speaking to fellow Australians on t-bars or chair lifts when overseas and they claim “after riding over here I’ll never be able to ride back home again, it’s just not as good.” What a load of garbage. For me, the local season is the one I look forward to more than any. Returning home from a season abroad for those few months of autumn, followed by packing your car and venturing to your local is awesome. Catching…

the foreigners

IT’S BEEN ALMOST A DECADE since Torstein Horgmo put Australia, and himself, on the world snowboarding map with a front 10 over a 135ft jump at Falls Creek. At the time it was the biggest competition jump ever hit on a snowboard. The world took notice after realising that not only does Australia have snow, we know how to build a jump and run a competition. Since then a wave of international pros have been making the trek down under to train in their off season, on what is now considered the premier place in the world to do so. The question remains, however, are Australian and New Zealand riders being left behind in their wake? A local rider has never won Stylewars since Ryan Tiene 10 years ago, and no locals…

cover story

“I WAS TAKEN TO THIS SPOT THREE YEARS AGO TO HIT A TRIPLE KINK THAT WAS UP NEAR THE TOP. WE WERE ALL STANDING AROUND JOKING SAYING, “IMAGINE SOMEONE SNOWBOARDING ON THAT THING.” IN THE SUMMER IT’S A BIG WATERFALL INTO A LAKE SO IT’S FUNNY TO EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. EVERYTHING LINED UP ON THAT DAY; WE HAD A GOOD CREW FOR SHOVELLING, GOOD SNOW AND A GREAT PHOTOGRAPHER AND FILMER. I ALMOST QUIT A FEW TIMES AS IT WAS SO SCARY, BUT I FINALLY GOT IT AND DIDN’T DIE. THANKS SO MUCH GUYS!”…

launching world snowfars

Experience is key and at ANZ Snowboarding we know how hard it can be to travel blindly to a new place in search of some good snow, good accommodation and a good time, only to come up short in every aspect. The team at World Surfaris, who for 20 years have been putting surfers into the best waves of their lives, have introduced World Snowfaris. They are offering a small and select range of “Unique Snow Adventures” to places they have been and loved. Their first offering is a powder hunting Snowfari to Japan in 2016. Expert guides, taking out small groups at a time in search of the famous Japanese powder that has graced this magazine for so long, will lead the adventures. The tours will include being led through the…
