the other side

My name is Ryan Tiene, and it’s my pleasure to be able to take over as the editor of Australian & New Zealand Snowboarding Magazine. I have been a professional snowboarder for the past ten years. I made a name for myself when I won the Stylewars event back in 2004. From there, I pursued a life in front of the lens filming for video projects such as Sandbox, Standard Films,Must Be Nice, international webseriesGet Outta Town, and the last season ofWildcats. As a young kid, growing up in Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains, this is more than I could ever have dreamed of. ANZ Snowboarding was the first magazine to publish a photo of me 13 years ago – I’ve grown up in these pages! Since then, they have pushed my…

nuking in north america

If you had your ear muffs on this summer because you didn’t want to hear about the huge amount of snow falling on the West Coast of North America, please stop reading! Consistent snowfalls wreaked havoc all over the West Coast, from avalanches in Mammoth, to Truckee in Tahoe being cut off from the world twice because of too much snow. Then, as you headed north, it didn’t stop! From unheard amounts of snow in Bend, Oregon for our boy Jared Elston (seen here, interview pg. 70) to Whistler, Canada having one of the best March snowfalls in recent history! (pg. 44)…

southern glory

For our first issue of the year, we’re celebrating our favourite local boarders from Australia and New Zealand with snaps taken from locations only in the Southern Hemisphere. As snowboarders, we cover some serious ground heading north all over the globe. When summer hits, it’s hard to shake the endless search for that next pow turn, hitting that big street rail or sending into an untouched pillow field. Sometimes, we forget to take a look in our own backyards. It might be a little harder to find, but if you’re willing to search, it’s out there! Here is a sneak preview of Nate Johnson boosting into a Chilean sunset. Check the gallery on pg. 110 for the adventures to come!…

haka tours

Established in 2006, Haka tours is the brainchild of kiwi Ryan Sanders, who once found himself wishing to escape the dull working life of corporate banking. A keen and experienced traveller, Ryan's love for his country and adrenaline led him to a vision: the creation of some incredibly awesome small-group adventure tours immersing travellers in the real New Zealand! Even back then, the belief was strong that size matters – meaning small groups make for a far better travel experience, and they've stuck strong with that ever since. Following his quest, Ryan was introduced to Taranaki boy Steve Latham, a scuba dive instructor who had been travelling around NZ all his life. With his combined love of nature and people, and perhaps his slightly off-the-wall attitude, Steve was the perfect man…

kolben saetre

Tell us about the shot! We flew into Andorra on a film trip with the Rusty Toothbrush crew. During our travels, we found this feature directly above another spot we had been sessioning the day prior. The next day, we went to check it out. It was around 10:00am, the run in was sketchy, and the approach didn’t really line up right. After some debate with the boys, we decided to give it a shot. Not long after the session began, JJ started sending his signature methods. The idea came to him as he scraped the wall to revert out. With the sun setting fast and only a few attempts left, he somehow managed to stomp it clean and we got the shot. It’s moments like these when the magic happens! What…

cover boy

Ryan: Congrats mate, you’ve got the cover of ANZ Snowboarding issue 65! Jordan John: Holy shit, dude! I can’t believe it. I don’t know what to say. R: We’re stoked for you! Where was this shot taken, and who was the photographer? J: Kolben Saetre took the photo, and it was taken up in Andora – which is a country between Spain and France – in some abandoned building. We were just driving into town and stumbled across it. Someone was like, “That would be cool,” so we took the photo. It worked out enough that I got the cover, so that’s pretty crazy! R: What trick were you were trying out there? J: I was trying to do a method and scrape my tail on the wall. I hit the wall pretty hard and…
