If the content of this issue proves anything, it’s that mankind’s creativity when it comes to propelling ourselves around deepens with every passing year. The diversity of the solutions to the problem of getting from A to B has never been broader. Put simply, 2019 will be an incredible year on planet car. At one end of the automotive gene pool, the EV goes mass-market with the arrival of VW’s ID range, the start of a product offensive that by 2022 will deliver 27 pure EV models across the VW Group. The irony that the manufacturer that accelerated the demise of the internal combustion engine faster than any other through its own misadventures now being the one best placed to capitalise on the shift change in the automotive landscape isn’t lost…

1 the shelby gt500 is maximum mustang

“A takedown artist.” That’s how Ford describes the gobby-looking new Mustang Shelby GT500. We presume that’s ’Murican for ‘giant killer’. That’s backed up by Ford’s bullish claim that “the new Shelby GT500 will surprise supercar owners with its Ford Performance racing tech, supercharged engine and visceral swagger”. Sounds punchy, until you look at the spec and discover the Shelby is every inch the musclebound supercar botherer. Behind the slightly Audi-esque megagrille (supposedly inspired by modern stealth fighter jets), there’s a 5.2-litre supercharged V8 engine. It develops “a projected 700 horsepower” and promises 0–60mph in the mid-threes, and a quarter-mile times below 11secs. Stopping it after the finish line are the largest brake discs ever fitted to an American sports coupe. The upgrades for the new GT500, which goes on sale this autumn, are…

2 tesla just got out-screened

Oh dear. This is the Byton M-Byte, a fully electric SUV from a Chinese start-up that’s full of tech (AI, 5G) and will be available before the year is out. It also has a 48in screen stretching from A-pillar to A-pillar. But that's not all… it has a seven-inch touchscreen in the steering wheel. Placed just above the airbag, this display doesn’t rotate with inputs – it remains orientated correctly the whole time, just like in an old Citroen C4. So, in the past few months, the Chinese have managed to land on the far side on the Moon and make a tablet on wheels. Where do they go from here?…

3 someone has made a half-size hoonitruck

A bloke called Alex Saint has taken a look at Kenny B’s Hoonitruck from Gymkhana 10 and thought “I want one of those.” Just smaller. So instead of using a 1977 Ford F-150, he went for a 1971 Honda N600 pickup and lobbed a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 bike engine in the back to give the 487kg mini truck a power-to-weight ratio of 390bhp per tonne. A keen drag racer, Alex has managed to get the pocket-sized pickup down the quarter-mile in 12.4secs at 104mph. Next up, fitting a turbo to take it to 400bhp, and hit the low 10s. We think Alex may need some medication.…

4 your future uber isn’t a lightly soiled prius

On-demand flying taxis that will cost no more than folding yourself into a grubby Prius are creeping closer to reality. This is the Nexus, from Bell Helicopter, shown as an actual model at the CES show in Las Vegas in January. Capable of carrying a pilot and four passengers (plus their kebabs) it uses eight articulated eight-foot fans to take off vertically, and can fly 150 miles between charges at up to 150mph. Uber is working with several manufacturers on eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, and plans to launch in 2023. Who wants first go?…

5 new merc cla is a swoopy little number

Here’s a sign of the times: Mercedes has revealed the new CLA, and not said a single word about engines, gearboxes or how fast it’ll do 0–60mph. Nope, it’s all about the tech. Now 48mm longer, 53mm wider and 2mm lower than before, it gets an updated ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice assistant that can accept more complex questions, and smart ambient lighting that knows where your hand is and spotlights it. Oh, and if you want to set a shortcut hand gesture, like ‘navigate me home’ or ‘play Capital FM’, then you make a V-sign at the car. No, we’re not making this up.…
