who’s who

CAPTAIN: JAGA CROSSINGHAM Jaga grew up at Hat Head on the NSW mid-north coast but moved to Fiji in 2004 where he and his wife Heather started a game and spearfishing charter operation on the Coral Coast of Viti Levu. Jaga’s expertise soon earned him a reputation as one of the best in the business. He now runs long-range and liveaboard charters throughout the Fijian archipelago, as well as game fishing charters for some of Fiji’s most exclusive private island resorts. CONTRIBUTOR: DARRYL FRENCH Darryl started fishing as a youngster in the South Island of New Zealand, chasing salmon and trout as well as snapper and kingfish. ‘Frenchy’ moved his family to Australia in 2005, working for Rio Tinto in Weipa. In 2012 he joined the newly formed Weipa Billfish Club and since…

the call of the wild

Have you ever wondered what lies beyond the horizon … and yearned to go take a look? Or felt that, despite your hopes, the home waters are never likely to deliver the action you crave – which you’re sure is really happening far, far away? If so, you’re not alone. The call of the wild beckons many of us. The fishing really is better in some distant locations, sometimes incredibly so. When you fish at home you’re limited, but out there amid all that ocean and coastline are some rare gems. Remote, barely fished areas with a confluence of bottom geography, fish migrations and ocean currents do exist, often generating an aggregation of fish in astounding numbers. The apex of the food pyramid requires a broad base to support it, and such…

australian tagging program

BLUEFIN SPECIAL More than 27,180 southern bluefin tuna (SBT) have been tagged under the NSW DPI Game Fish Tagging Program since 1973. So far, 226 of these have been reported as recaptured. However, SBT recaptures are now becoming more frequent, with 98 recaptures reported in the past five years alone, providing a wealth of information for the program! Prior to October 2019, the tagging program had not received any reported recaptures of bluefin over 100kg. That quickly changed when we received two recaptures of ‘barrel’ tuna within two days of one another. Incredibly, both were originally tagged by the same boat, some days at liberty and was caught over 105 nautical miles (~195km) from its original release location. RECAPTURED WITH A SPEAR The second bluefin was released off Robe in South Australia on 4…

after 50 years, still the igfa record on 24kg tackle

This photo of Lucky Strike remains one of the iconic images from the early days of the Cairns and Great Barrier Reef fishery – four men in a small boat with their enormous black marlin occupying the entire cockpit and half the cabin. The catch is the now famous 509.84kg (1124-pound) black marlin caught off Cairns on October 31, 1969. The angler was Eddie Seay of Papatoeoe in New Zealand, and his catch established a new IGFA World and GFAA Australian record on 50-pound (24kg) tackle, a mark that still stands today, 50 years later. The record’s 50th anniversary provided the opportunity to discuss the details of the catch with Jim Harvey, a longtime resident of Cairns and former Kiwi. Together with the skipper of Lucky Strike on that day, Capt Snooks…
