the rarest ferrari race boat ever built

You may not know it, but Ferrari masterfully engineered a powerful racing boat back in the 1950s that was built for one thing: breaking the World Speed Record on the water. Achille Castoldi, a racing champion, proposed such a boat to the one and only Enzo Ferrari who agreed to help him in the endeavor. Enzo Ferrari put his best engineers on the project and was even personally involved. The result was a one-of-a-kind Ferrari engine that sat atop a boat built by Timossi Azzano's Cantieri boatyard on Lake Como, Italy; a hydroplane made of steel, marine-grade wood and mahogany that weighed only 1,764 lbs. Next up, they needed an engine, and a powerful one at that. This is where Ferrari's top engineers put their brilliant minds to work. Being 1952, Ferrari…

classic elegance for the holidays

Typically we grace our pages with the biggest, boldest sport watches on the market. Often, we underscore our message with incredible car-related themes, since so many top watch brands align themselves with the world of auto sports. Now, however, for the holidays, we are showcasing some beautifully elegant timepieces that are not dull or dreary ho-hum pieces, but rather watches that offer singular aesthetics and a twist of attitude. So, what defines a classic watch? The truth is, individual taste. However, there are some guidelines that help a little. Generally the case shape of a classic watch is round. Let’s face it, most of the vintage watches on the market today recall round timepieces from the 1950’s, ‘60’s and ‘70’s. However, it is also fine to deviate from the round watch,…

Longbridge Club Rose Gold Taking its inspiration from the functionality and the aesthetic appeal of vintage measuring instruments, Reservoir is all about recalling gauges and cult objects from a variety of eras and translating them into watches that transcend time. This Longbridge Club watch offers a radical display of time using a retrograde minute hand that travels from zero to 60 and then jumps back to the 00 point to start its voyage again. It also indicates the hour via a jump hour system, wherein the hour is indicated at 6:00 on the dial via an aperture and each hour it jumps to the next digit. Directly beneath the jump hour display is the power reserve indicator in a gauge-like format. The movement is Swiss made and features a patented 124-part…

U51 Diver Tourbillon To the average eye, this Angelus U51 Diver Tourbillon looks nothing like a dive watch. Its incredibly skeletonized movements and strong case aesthetics belie its real use as a tool watch. In this most recent version, not only does the watch offer countdown dive indication in bright orange, but also is equipped with an incredible five days of power reserve. The mechanical hand-wound A-310 movement that powers the 45mm titanium timepiece is equipped with a silicon lever escapement and titanium bridges and plates to ensure optimal precision. The crown at 4:00 on the case is for winding and setting, while the crown at 2:00 is for rotating the unidirectional 60-minute bezel. There is also a helium escape valve at 9:00 that ensures water resistance to 300 meters. The…

Time Pyramid Tourbillon A beloved timepiece from Arnold & Son, the newest Time Pyramid Tourbillon watch is equipped with a skeletonized tourbillon escapement (that compensates for errors in timekeeping due to the effects of gravity on the wrist in certain positions) in full view at 12:00 on the dial. This complicated pyramid-shaped movement seems to float in space between two sapphire crystals. The brand’s A&S 8615 movement showcases the hours and minutes via an off-center dial at 6:00, while the seconds are displayed via 20 dots on the flange at the 12:00 location. There are two power reserve indicators on each side of the sapphire crystal. Essentially the right barrel takes over the supply of power when the left barrel winds down. This offers optimum precision. The 44.6mm watch is cased…
