the months we long for

THE MONTHS OF AUTUMN weren’t always special to me—but now they are everything. They are what I long for. I spend half the year planning for October through December. Where will I hunt? What will I hunt? What friends can join me? What started out as an activity attached to my job, has now turned into a hobby—no, a passion. For the past few years, I’ve had to tell my mom “No, I won’t be home for Thanksgiving.” I’ll explain to her, again, how it’s prime hunting season, and I’ll be on the road, chasing something wild behind my bird dog. She mostly understands, because she knows how important it is to me. I’m sure you understand this passion. You’ll have spent all summer prepping your gun dog, getting him or her ready…

snakebite vaccine?

In your September issue, you cautioned hunters to snake-proof their dog by hiring a professional dog trainer who specialized in that training. Oftentimes, it is difficult to locate a snake-proof trainer near your home. About 14 years ago, GUN DOG wrote of a snake-poison vaccine available for California. Why wasn't that method mentioned in the article? Is the vaccine still produced? I believe the article stated the vaccine would be shipped to your vet, and the vet would administer the shot. Gary Whitley Fincastle, VA Gary, you are correct, it can be difficult to find a snake-proof trainer near you. We recommond speaking with your veternarian to help you locate a trainer, or a simple Google search for "Rattlesnake-avoidance training near me" may yield results. As for the snake-poison vaccine, check out our August…

shotgunning revolution

EVERY SHOTGUN SHOOTER has, at one time or another, been in a slump. The frustration of missing birds or targets and not understanding why can be haunting, but Garmin’s new Xero S1 Trapshooting Trainer offers a sophisticated solution to determining what’s happening once you pull the trigger. And, it has the potential to forever change the way we perform on the trap range and practice for hunting season. The Xero S1 uses radar to capture an image of both a clay target and a shot string, and this provides hunters and shooters with detailed, near real-time feedback on what’s happening with every shot. What’s more, the technology is user-friendly, and data regarding your shotgun performance is displayed immediately after the shot on the Xero S1’s five-inch touch screen. The system also…

to shoot or not to shoot?

IT’S NOT LIKE training a pointing dog isn’t hard enough already. First, there’s the question of finding good training grounds. Then, finding penned birds. Then, finding the time. And finally, there’s the question of how the dog should behave on an actual hunt and, most importantly, how we should respond to that behavior. Case in point: Shooting non-pointed birds. The easy answer to that is, well, easy—don’t. If you’re worried about corrupting your dog’s training, turning him into a flusher, or any of a number of other reasons, then save yourself the aggravation and don’t shoot any bird your dog doesn’t first point and hold. But, I’m here to tell you that in most cases, the above potential problems rarely, if ever, manifest themselves when a bird is shot over a pointing…
