welcome friends!

Welcome to the very first issue of Heart of Hospitality! This has been one…crazy…year! When Leslie first asked me to join her Board of Directors with Mon Ami Ministry, I never in my wildest dreams thought it was going to lead to us starting a publication firm, and launching our hospitality magazine…but here we are! It has been a dream of both mine and Leslie's to start a magazine, and I can't think of a more perfect person to partner with me in Heart of Hospitality. I am truly blessed to call her my business partner, but even more so, to be able to call her my friend. We have both been hit by some serious setbacks, but have overcome the impossible and are so pleased to be sending you this…

dearest friends,

Fall. I absolutely love this time of year! I celebrate it by spending every last minute I can outside! There is nothing like a crisp, cool, autumn night filled with the lingering aroma of wood burning from a smoldering bonfire prepped and ready for s’mores. The days are shorter - filled with a warmth that feels like summer is trying to hang on for just one more minute! The flowers in my garden are more beautiful than ever as if to give one last hoorah. Nathaniel Hawthorne says it best: "…I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house. So, I have spent almost all the daylight hours in the open air." In this first issue of Heart of Hospitality Magazine, we want to encourage you to…

leslie's favorite things

For fall, some of my favorite things include (clockwise from top left: these cozy, hand-crocheted slippers by Wanda are so soft your feet feel like they are walking on a cloud. Crowning Jewels sends me a new piece of jewelry every month with words of inspiration for every occasion. This coffee scented candle warms my senses with the smell of my favorite beverage. Our beautiful Mon Ami signature prayer shawl allows me to walk with the Word of God everywhere I go. These cute teaspoons are so delicate that you can't help but feel like a princess when using them. Our Mon Ami signature coffee, special blend is the best way to start my day!…

We are in desperate need of you - yes, YOU! I hear people ask if hospitality is relevant in today's society. I believe that hospitality's ancient and cross-cultural roots give us universal concepts worth holding on to: goodwill, friendship, kindness, comfort, caring for friends and strangers alike, and extending peace. It has been said that hospitality is the virtue of a great soul that cares for the whole universe through the ties of humanity. It is time we take hospitality out of the house and on a road trip! The hospitality road trip in my life happened quite by accident - and arrived quite sneakily without my even realizing it. B.C. (before children) I used to be one of those fun, young women with adorable, little handbags - you know the…

Planning your Party from Start to Finish Leslie's helpful planning tips When it comes to party planning there are a couple of things that I believe are absolute. 1. First, enjoy the process! Planning your get together or event whether it’s 4 people, 40 or 400 should be fun, and not another source of stress! I always say, “How bad could it be, or how crazy can it get?” If you are relaxed so will your guests be relaxed. 2. Be prepared enough that when your guests arrive, you can greet them and sit down with them. If you are not ready to sit down with them, offer a beverage and invite them to talk with you while you’re finishing up. Again, relax! If your party is a large event, delegate, delegate, delegate! You…

a place settting for one

I used to love visiting my grandmother’s little onebedroom house where the main floor was smaller than most apartments in Los Angeles. I used to love running my fingers over the antique organ that my grandfather once played. I had never met him as he passed when I was a baby. She had a wonderful faux fireplace at one end of the cozy sitting room where she placed a ceramic set of Persian cats she made. One was white with amber-yellow eyes named after my first cat, Princess, and the other was gray with green eyes, named Sheba, after her cat. To this day I still have that ceramic cat, and it sits in front of my fireplace in my home. My mother did not grow up in this house, but…
