My house is not big. In fact, the first time I added up the square footage I had to do it twice because I couldn’t believe the number. The two floors we live on (we have an unfinished basement) add up to about 1,250 square feet — not a lot of room for four people. Built in 1905, my narrow Victorian house has a grand total of three closets (none of which are deep enough to take hangers without slanting them on an angle), bulky cast-iron radiators that occupy valuable floor space and only one bathroom. Its saving grace? Soaring ceilings, two fireplaces and intricate period details — charm that, for me, outweighs its shortcomings. My challenge is dealing with all our stuff.
