on the home front

I’m a decade into my relationship with my home. What first attracted me (the never-touched Victorian layout with proper rooms, the plaster walls, the original floors) is now starting to drive me crazy. The rooms seem too small, the walls have cracks, and the creaky floors are the only security system we have. Of course, I’ve since added two kids to the mix, so what once seemed like tons of space now feels cramped and heaving with stuff. And let’s not forget the single bathroom. All in all, it adds up to either doing a top-to-bottom renovation of our current home, or moving on. I spend many evenings cruising real-estate listings or scrolling through websites and social media posts looking for inspiration for a whole-house makeover. So, in putting this renovation-themed…

ANDREW and JODI BATAY-CSORBA Architects, “True to Character” (page 48) Partners in design and life, this duo founded their Toronto-based architecture and interior design studio in 2010. Where do you find design inspiration? Our favourite installation artists: Yayoi Kusama, Anish Kapoor, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude. A design element worth the splurge? Permanent elements that can’t be upgraded easily like plumbing and flooring. AMANDA ROSS Writer, “’80s Remix” (page 56) The virtuoso writer and editor’s work has been published in titles such as Travel + Leisure and The Globe and Mail. Paint colour you’re excited to try? I’m a ruthless Craigslist devotee, and I regularly haunt vintage stores and estate…

I thought I was finally finished decorating my charcoal and mustard bedroom until I saw this chair in December 2019’s “Focus.” It’s one of those things that you don’t think you need until you see it — and I had to have it. So imagine my surprise when it was featured on a recent segment with Lynda Reeves on The Marilyn Denis Show! Thank you for the inspiration. I look forward to every issue. — SUSAN STEIN, Ottawa House & Home Velvet chair in Mustard. $129. At HomeSense. HOLIDAY POLL Every year, just after our November Holiday issue appears, we hold our breath… and wait for the complaints and kudos to arrive. Sure enough, this year was no different. “It’s too early” is the common beef. “No one wants to think about Christmas before Thanksgiving,”…

GOTTA HAVE IT Colour! Pattern! Texture! Printed grasscloth brings a fresh focus to your walls. Natural fibre papers feel cool and modern. COOL COLLAB JONATHAN ADLER+ CAESARSTONE The designer reaches for the sky at IDS Toronto. H&H brings him back to earth to talk kitchens. What inspired your cloudscape installation for Caesarstone, debuting at the Interior Design Show Toronto in January 2020? I’m having a surreal and ethereal moment. I challenged myself to design a soft environment using Caesarstone, a material that people usually think of for straight lines and sharp angles. Sounds heavenly! What else will we see? There will be faces and ostrich feathers. There will be neoclassical columns inspired by Caesarstone’s HQ in Israel. I wanted it to be very Instagrammable. To quote your husband, Simon Doonan, you’re usually about amping up a space. How can…
