I REMEMBER WHEN I MOVED onto our street 18 years ago, my friend and legendary publisher Michael de Pencier, who had lived there for many years, had some good advice. “It’s a great street, but there will never ever be a time without at least one renovation going on. Get used to it!” He was so right. After a time, I learned to get used to the endless trucks and construction noise. I even stopped noticing what was going on behind the latest building permit nailed to the newest hoarding. But then, last year, there was one house that I could not stop staring at. It was a drab, rather ugly house in a classic Tudor style… until the painting crew showed up with buckets of black and white paint. I…

I normally gravitate to neutral spaces with loads of white but, wow, the Kohly-Muni home (“Modern Family,” Jan-Feb) designed by Ali Budd is stunning! Absolutely gorgeous, and it has me reassessing my aversion to colour. I’ve read H&H since the beginning, and your magazine continues to inspire me. — VICTORIA RANDALL, Oakville, Ont. My heart swelled with happiness to see the smiling kids of South Asian descent on the cover foldout (“Modern Family,” Jan-Feb). Thank you for showing this family in their beautiful home. — NANCY DEVRIES, North Vancouver, B.C. Your Jan-Feb issue is amazing! You showed me many things I’ve never seen before. I found the trends very interesting and the “Modern Family” home — wow! I’ll be subscribing for many more years to come. — M. ISOLA, South Surrey, B.C. I enjoyed “On the…

PHOEBE HOWARD Author, “Home Library” (page 40) The Florida-based authority on Southern style loves hosting Sunday dinners for her husband, four kids and six grandkids. Dream makeover if money was no object? I’d build an enclosed outdoor kitchen, with doors that fully open to the pool. Decorating trend that intrigues you? Bright colours for cabinets and trim. It photographs well — I’m just not sure I could live with it! WERNER STRAUBE Photographer, “Interview” (page 48) The longtime Chicago photographer recently relocated to Kalamazoo, Mich. Dream makeover if money was no object? Our really outdated kitchen! I cook a lot and miss our old home’s gas range. Biggest renovation lesson learned? Live with what you have for a few years so you really know what you want when you invest in a remodel. PETER…

1 Colette van den Thillart: A Novel Wallpaper In a three-way partnership with L.A. art and design studio Work + Sea and Toronto’s Memo Showroom, designer Colette van den Thillart has reimagined Canadian author Marian Engel’s groundbreaking 1976 novel Bear as a painterly wallpaper. The pattern’s cameo-like moments began as individual oil studies, giving the paper a traditional feel that playfully balances its provocative details. “It’s such a conversation starter,” say Colette. “Work + Sea’s fearless and wild approach to making papers is very English. It really was kismet.” Choose from five gorgeous colourways ranging from pale and pretty to dark and moody. The Bear wallpaper, $290/10' roll. At Memo Showroom. 2 Brian Gluckstein: Big-box Refined Brian Gluckstein has a new line of stylish pieces for The Home Depot in Canada, launching late March, that…

Celebrated Finnish designer Alvar Aalto’s undulating Aalto vase, originally created for Iittala for the 1937 Paris world’s fair, has been given a 21st-century update. Handblown editions made entirely of recycled waste glass and shaped with a wooden mould each have a unique, more organic surface. The final colour depends on the waste glass used, and varies between shades of blue, green and grey. FUN FACT: It takes seven craftspeople 12 work stages to make an Aalto vase.…
