Quilts stitched 120 years ago look quaint today but were cutting-edge design way back then. Novel fabrics and patterns encouraged a certain style that easily dates a quilt to “circa 1900”. Fabric fashion included cheaper versions of bright reds and navy blues, the Turkey reds and indigoes once premium goods. New colors included wine-colored red and black. Up till then true black was an elusive color in cottons. For neutrals, quilters liked shirtings—neat prints on white backgrounds. They favored a high-contrast look. The unspoken style rule was: “Simple print, complex patchwork.” Borders were minimal and many scrappy quilts had none. Magazine and mail-order patterns offered new designs—the bow-tie, ocean wave and drunkard’s path—but enthusiasm for complex design was often greater than required sewing skills for a generation raised with sewing machines…
