In some ways, Californian Jamie Fingal is a typical quilter: she loves fabric, stitching, creating new designs, and hanging out with other quilters. But that’s pretty much where the similarities end. One look at Fingal’s quilts and you can see she takes a different approach. A ‘rebel’ approach, in her own words, because she fuses all of her quilts, doesn’t follow a lot of the ‘rules,’ and most of the quilts have some kind of embellishment. When she started quilting, Fingal may have used a button or two, beads, or sequins. But then she made a collection of fiber art postcards for an auction, embellishing with mother-of-pearl buttons, safety pins, and ring trim. trimming oversized triangle-squares

1. Using squares that are 1"–1 1/8" larger than desired finished size of triangle-square, align 450 line of ruler along diagonal seam of triangle-square, allowing top and right edges to extend slightly past the edges of ruler. 2. Trim along top and right edge of ruler. 3. Turn triangle-square. Align ruler’s 450 line with seam, and unit’s cut edges with desired measurements. Trim top and right sides to square up unit. 1. Cut hexagons to desired finished size from cardstock, or use purchased paper hexagons. 2. Using a hexagon template, cut hexagons from fabric approximately ¼" larger all around than desired finished size. 3. Turn seam allowance over cardstock and either glue-baste or thread-baste seam allowance in place. 4. With right sides facing, whipstitch pieces together, using stitches approximately ⅛" apart, just catching fabric edges. Sew from corner to corner, knotting at each end. 5. Continue adding units. For inset seams, bend unit slightly in order to align right sides, and sew from corner to corner. 6. Remove cardstock templates once unit is completely sewn.
