peeking into the future

THE “NEW LOOK” MAGNUM has elicited interesting responses from our readers as those for and against have voiced their appreciation or disapproval accordingly. Now might be a good time to recap on why we chose to go this route. I have touched on this issue in previous Trail Talks and in replies to letters, so if I repeat anything, please bear with me.Print media have had a rough time during the past couple of years, with circulation figures dropping, mostly due to a new generation that’s not reading, with masses of information becoming available online and advertisers trying online media to capture a non-reading audience. However, the hyped-up prediction that the internet will kill off the print media seems to have been misplaced, as there…

9.3x74R Ammo I’m battling to find 9.3x74R 286gr Federal Cape Shock Woodleigh Hydro Solid or Federal Cape Shock Barnes Banded Solid ammunition. I have contacted countless dealers without any success. Should one of the readers notice the ammo somewhere on a shelf please let me know. The ammunition is needed for an upcoming hunt in Zimbabwe.– Klaus Schindler, Western Cape➤ According to Federal’s website they only produce 9.3x74R Cape Shok ammunition loaded with Swift A-Frame bullets and Woodleigh Hydro Solids. If any readers or retailers are able to help Mr Schindler please let us know at mail@manmagnum.co.za Lantana Leopard I refer to Ottar Rønning’s letter in the April 2018 edition in which he states that he finds my article Lantana Leopard in the January 2018 edition a bit…

shootout 9mm short

Remington RM380. Beretta Pico. Ruger LCP II. Kahr CT380. S&W .380 Bodyguard FDE. SOME OF THE hottest items on today’s handgun market are .380 pistols. The reason for the dramatic surge of interest in these small lightweight handguns is threefold: materials, ballistics, and more US states adopting “Shall Issue” CCW (carrying a concealed weapon) laws.In the past, quality .380 pistols such as the Colt M1908 and Walther PP/PPK were all-steel, hence heavy for this cartridge. Today’s lightweight polymer frames make them much easier to carry. The .380 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol), designed by John Moses Browning, first appeared as Fabrique Nationale’s Modéle 1910. In America, .380 pistols were first offered by Colt, Savage, H&R and Remington. As originally loaded, the .380 had a 17mm straight…

the 6.5x47 lapua

A typical 100m group. THE 6.5X47 LAPUA cartridge was released in 2005 as part of a joint venture between Finland’s Nammo Lapua and the Swiss rifle maker Grünig & Elmiger in an effort to produce the ultimate cartridge for the International Military Sports Council (CISM) 300 metre challenge. The result was a cartridge using a 6.5mm (.264 inch) bullet with a high ballistic coefficient factor (good at bucking the wind) and a case designed with a shoulder angle of 30 degrees, reducing brass flow (case stretch) and hence the need for constant neck-trimming during reloading. The design improves combustion efficiency, using less powder to achieve specific velocities compared with other 6.5mm cartridges (see table). This results in longer barrel life, lower recoil, excellent case life and low extreme…

hippo in the reeds

DURING THE 14 YEARS my family and I lived on the Zambezi at Victoria Falls and later on Nampini Ranch, I quite frequently travelled the river by boat, hunting crocodiles, watching game, or looking for crop-raiding hippo. I also guided a few safari clients who wanted hippo, and bagged some very impressive bulls. The river was navigable between the Katombora and Mambova rapids and there were plenty of hippo, crocs and various other game animals on our side of the river. Most of the game on the Zambian side had been poached out. I hunted crocs by night using a spotlight to pick up their glowing eyes on the water as this was the most successful method. For every croc seen during the day, you see about eight…

hollis 10-bore muzzle-loader

This shows the size of the elegant and well balanced 10-bore muzzle-loader. MY LIFELONG INTEREST in historical firearms led to an overwhelming desire to fire every type of old gun I can lay my hands on. I particularly enjoy shooting guns used in the early days of the Eastern Cape frontier – guns that once thundered across the very same veld I have hunted for over 50 years. I find it especially thrilling to walk in the footsteps of those old frontiersmen – more so while carrying the same type of guns they did.Mostly, I enjoy using, or at least test-firing, the big bores. For instance I once shot a huge bull giraffe with my 6-bore (.919) muzzle-loading elephant gun. I have also fired a heavy double-barrelled…
