Using the yardstick of volume, single malt Scotch accounts for less than 2 million cases of whisk(e)y sales in the U.S. market, compared to 23 million cases for Bourbon/Tennessee whiskey and 13.4 million cases for Canadian whisky. Yet somehow single malt Scotch has the greatest star power in the whisk(e)y universe, showcased by brands that regularly create consumer pull at well above $40. Bourbon might be the biggest thing in the whisk(e)y boom, but single malt Scotch has the most mystique. Diageo Agrees To Joint Venture With Cuba Ron….Diageo is set to enter the Cuban rum segment, agreeing to form a joint venture with state-owned producer Cuba Ron through its Diageo Europe subsidiary. Under the deal, the joint venture will have exclusive global distribution rights to the Santiago de Cuba brand, and will be called Ron Santi-ago SA. The Santiago de Cuba label has four core variants—Carta Blanca, Añejo, 11-year-old, and 12-year-old. With the joint venture agreement, Cuba Ron now counts as part-ners both Diageo and Pernod Ricard, which distributes its 4.6 million-case Havana Club brand globally. Cincoro Tequila, helmed by a team of NBA owners—including Michael Jordan—and finance professionals, launched in 12 markets across the U.S. market last month. The Tequila takes aim at the luxury market in the on-and off-premise, with packaging designed by Nike creative director Mark Smith and liquid selected by the brand’s founders in consultation with industry experts. Cincoro’s founding partners are Emilia Fazzalari and Wyc Grousbeck of the Boston Celtics, Jeanie Buss of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Wes Edens of the Milwaukee Bucks, in addition to Jordan, who owns the Charlotte Hornets. Miami: Tiki Culture Gets An Upgrade At Drinks-Focused Downtown Venue Rum-heavy drinks and tropical elements shine at Esotico Miami, a new tiki restaurant and bar in downtown Miami’s Arts and Entertainment District. The venue, managed by local business management consultant Graspa Group, opened in August with an impressive drinks program that spans tiki classics and signatures, large-format shareable drinks, myriad rum flights, and classic cocktails, as well as beer and alcohol-free offerings.
