Diageo Sells 19 Brands To Sazerac….Diageo has offloaded 19 non-core brands to Sazerac in a transaction worth $550 million. The U.S. volume of the brands was 2.9 million cases last year, down 7.5%, according to Impact Databank. Still, Diageo said that the deal will reduce its U.S. market share by less than 50 basis points. The brands moving to Sazerac are Seagram’s VO, Seagram’s 83, Seagram’s Five Star, Myers’s, Parrot Bay, Romana Sambuca, Popov, Yukon Jack, Gold-schlager, Stirrings, The Club, Scoresby, Black Haus, Peligroso, Relska, Grind, Piehole, Booth’s, and John Begg. Diageo has agreed to enter into long-term supply contracts with Sazerac for five of the brands, each for a period of ten years. Chicago: Tinker To Evers Pays Homage To Baseball Located near the Chicago Cubs’ Wrigley Field, the sophisticated underground cocktail lounge Tinker to Evers opened in October in the Windy City’s Wrigleyville neighborhood. The baseball haven, which aims to stand out among the beer halls and sports bars in the area, is named for a famous poem about Cubs shortstop Joe Tinker and second baseman Johnny Evers. Artistic renditions of their original baseball cards are on display at the bar. The concept—created by the operators of local restaurant Union Pizzeria—offers baseball-themed drinks and showcases Windy City spirits. Schramsberg In recent years, the domestic sparkling wine category has taken off, with brands priced around $15 leading the charge. Now, as the category nears the 11 million-case mark in the U.S., California-based luxury sparkling wine producer Schramsberg is looking to turn consumers’ eyes to higher price points. Schramsberg produces around 85,000 cases of sparkling wine annually, with the flagship Blanc de Blancs ($35 a 750-ml.) its largest seller at 35,000 cases. Last year, 28% of the brand’s revenue came from sales of sparkling wine retail-priced at $55-$175, according to CEO Hugh Davies. Among the high-end offerings making gains are the Chardonnay-focused J. Schram ($120), a vintage-dated blanc de blancs that sells around 2,500 cases each year.
