changing leaves

Autumn is such an inspiring time of year. The biggest, most obvious reason is the explosion of color that happens as the leaves start turning bright yellow, deep gold, warm orange and blazing scarlet before they start to fall off the trees. If you’re lucky enough to live in a part of the country where this happens, you know exactly what I mean; the paths you travel every day look brand new and filled with creative inspiration when you see the riot of warm colors against the bright blue sky. Every quilter I know has expressed similar thoughts about autumn, that it’s impossible not to be creatively rejuvenated when confronted with such beauty. When we decided to focus on leaves for this fall issue, the quilt designers we worked with definitely…

• your photos • ideas • stories Ruth Martineau of Methuen, Massachusetts, says that Whitehorse Sky* (McCall’s Quilting, March/April 2017) looked complicated at first but went together step by step very nicely. She’s been quilting for a long time so she was able to mostly use fabrics from her stash. Louise Clark of Portland, Oregon, loves the design of Primarily Geese* (McCall’s Quilting, Jan/Feb 2018) and made a smaller version in flannels for a baby that was about to be born. She hand quilted a lightning bolt motif to echo the geese, and appliqued a Hamsa hand to the cuddly backing to keep away the evil eye and to surround the baby with love, beauty and comfort. Janice McCall of Ocala, Florida, made Homeland* (McCall’s Quilting, July/August 2017) as a Quilt of Valor for her…

• your questions • our answers Erin Russek Associate Editor I love pumpkins and I have quite a collection of orange fabrics to prove it. I have so many fond memories of picking pumpkins with my kids on crisp fall days. I wanted to re-create that feeling here so I chose a bright blue, a soft yellow and several greens to go along with my orange fabrics. I also added a fun striped fabric to tie it all together. Gigi Khalsa Associate Editor I was inspired by one of the prints in my stash to go a bit further than the traditional red and gold—it has trees with leaves in all sorts of colors: red, yellow, teal and purple. I’d like this fall to be full of saturated color in deep, rich jewel tones, highlighted by pops…

in search of fun: fall foliage, quilts and more!

VERMONT Vermont is, without a doubt, the place to visit for fall foliage. The entire state is bursting with color, and thanks to its small size, it’s easy to cover a lot of ground quickly. Activities abound for the entire family, and quilts shows dot the state. For the ultimate road trip, rent a convertible from Country Driving Tours in Bristol, Vermont, and take in the foliage with the top down. Definitely spend time at the incredible Shelburne Museum, located less than 10 minutes from the shores of Lake Champlain. Electra Havemeyer Webb founded the museum to preserve her family’s collection of horse-drawn carriages, and thanks to her vision, the 45-acre property now features 39 structures and more than 20 gardens. Webb relocated unique historical buildings to house numerous collections in a…
