I am constantly amazed by what our readers get up to in their spare time and none more so than the two who have shared their stories this month. Colin Le Comte so enjoys cruising the French coastline around his native Guernsey (he’s writing about WESTERN BRITTANY in this issue) that he’s set up a website to share detailed information on all the local harbours and marinas he’s visited. We are used to seeing photographs of sportsboats carving perfect white circles in a pristine blue sea but it’s rare to see something as large as this new Custom Line 30m running such a tight set of rings. Either the Ferretti Group is keen to show off its nimble handling or they are making a subtle reference to its design ethos that is said to “unite the architectural language of the maritime tradition, living materials, fine craftsmanship and the power of light, encompassing them in a perfect circle”. As usual, taking the boat out of the water at the end of the season turned into a complicated affair. The theory is easy: book lift-out slot, motor round on the appropriate day, lift out. The reality never measures up. I winter the boat ashore at MDL’s Dartside Quay facility on the River Dart. The river is about half an hour along the coast from Torquay, it’s a lovely run on a nice day. However the forecast was threatening fierce winds, so I decided to take the boat around early and moor it at Darthaven Marina. COWES When rounding Egypt Point I’ve often wondered where the inhabitants of Cowes Castle – those “gentlemen actively interested in yachting” as the Royal Yacht Squadron once described its patrons – nip out for a bite. I couldn’t imagine the likes of the King of Norway, telly magnate Lord Grade and cyclonic vac-whizz Sir James Dyson popping out to downtown Cowes. But what if they turned the other way and headed along the coast towards Gurnard instead? A brisk walk along the promenade would bring them to the New Holmwood Hotel, which on the surface is a pretty standard English seaside affair with three stars to its name. Replacing the Gran Turismo 40 has seen Beneteau take a more gentle evolutionary approach as opposed to a total rethink. The 41 takes the GT40’s blueprint and includes enhancements here and there to improve life on board and keep the boat at the top of its game. If the renders are to be believed it’s a good looking thing, sporting a new hull window shape with a shark’s fin of GRP jutting into the glazing and a more sculptural look to the hardtop and aft flanks. A solid GRP hardtop peels back to uncover a cockpit that centres around a vast U-shaped dinette opposite a slightly less vast wet bar.
